my 5 yr old dd has been diagnosed with this since september07 and is on medication which at first was helping ,she has been in school for a year, yet still has no friends(it doesnt bother her)but the main issue is she doesnt sleep she trashes the house nothing is out of her way she gets on wardrobes shelves etc she has also been put on meteloin 3mgx2 an hour before bedtime(7pm) but sleeps only from11pm to 3am then causes havoc any ideas to stop this before we have no house left to reck

Oh you poor soul- I have a similar ds1 and can empathise.

Melatonin question- is it slow release? otherwise it wears off quickly which is what causes the 3 am waking.

ds1 has an alarm (£15 in maplins) which alerts us if he leaves his room- I didnt feel a lock would be safe but the alarm works and do you know what? he likes it; keeps his brothers away!

have you looked at diets- salicylates might be a good start, helped with ds1

Do ask, yes. Plus- some kids just dont respond well to melatonin. My ds1 is OK for a few days then gets resistant. That's not uncommon. I save it for emergencies nw, but he genuinely doesn't need much sleep sadly. SOme kids, esp. (IME) ASD ones don't.

Have yo had a look through the NAS (national autistic society) website? There's loads of info on there.

Bedroom- OK this is what we're doing ext with Sam if the current regime ( wardrobe with doors off, metal framed bed, door alarm) doesn't work: we're pulling out everything except a matress of the floor and his lego. We have no choice; we've been through several beds in no time.

Erm- I take it you are getting DLA, yes?

Is it just melatonin she's taking or is she taking other meds as well?

We found the the stimulant type meds didn't suit ds and he is now on atomoxetine (Strattera) which suits him much better.

If the night time problem only started since beginning methyphenidate I suggest discussing with the paed.

no its just got worse she trashes everything and every thing im worried she could hurt herself (she has been known to put baby powder in tv twice) and to mum23asd she was on 5mg at 3.30 to start which has been increased to7.5 recently but thank you al this is to be disscused with paeds in october
