National Autistic Society launches first ever
online autism service directory

Today (22nd February 2005) sees the launch of PARIS (Public Autism Resource and Information Service), a new online service provided by The National Autistic Society (NAS), the UK?s leading charity for people with autism, and supported by Vodafone UK.

PARIS is a completely searchable database of thousands of autism services available across the UK. From schools, day services, outreach programmes and diagnostic services, to play schemes, support groups and training courses, the database can list them all.

The free online resource is the first of its kind in the world and is now available at www.info.autism.org.uk. PARIS will lead the way in providing access to autism specific services throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Phil Dimmocks, PARIS Project Manager said:

?PARIS will be of great benefit to hundreds of thousands of people across the UK and is something the NAS has been keen to develop for a number of years. We want PARIS to be a vehicle for pushing forward the agenda when lobbying for more local services and discussing the needs of people with autism across the UK. The NAS is fully committed to ensuring that the information in PARIS is as up-to-date and as comprehensive as possible. PARIS is a growing resource and we welcome feedback and comments from the public, and encourage them to let us know of any autism specific services which are not currently on the PARIS database?

Funding from Vodafone UK, as part of a three year ?cause partnership?, has enabled the NAS to develop PARIS to its full potential, helping accelerate its launch and enabling the service to provide more interactive features and benefits for people with autism, their families, friends and professionals involved in their care.

Martin Tod, Vodafone UK said:

?We are proud to be associated with this pioneering and innovative new service, and we look forward to developing other NAS services as part of our three year commitment to the NAS.?

The NAS has used a version of PARIS internally for over a year now to help clients, callers to the NAS Autism Helpline and families of people with autism to access the most up-to-date information in their area.

Sheila Moorcroft, parent of a child with autism said:

?PARIS is excellent for parents and professionals alike. It brings together a lot of really useful information all in one place so that you can get an overview of the services available locally, regionally and nationally. Getting the support, services, and education that our children need can often be very difficult, and at each stage along the way, new challenges and issues present themselves. PARIS will be brilliant for helping parents to find the services available to them at every stage in their child?s development.?

PARIS complements the existing NAS website www.autism.org.uk, the largest online autism information resource in the world. As part of its commitment to the NAS, Vodafone UK is developing a version of PARIS to be accessed via mobile phones ? working in partnership to improve communication for people with autism. The mobile phone version will be launched later this year. Visit www.info.autism.org.uk to search for autism specific services in your area.
