DS has AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER!!!!!

ADOS test DS scored highly in all 3 areas, in 2 areas he scored double the cut off and in the thrid area he scored one point above the cut off.

thanks guys. Right now i dont know how to feel. Hundreds of emotions.
I feel relieved he finally has the 'label' to get him the help, i feel heartbroken that its taken this long to get this DX, i feel pleased that i pushed and angry that i HAD to push.
On the drive home from the doctors i stopped at the off license and am half way through a bottle of jacobs creek!! Tears are flowing easily but im OK.

Do i tell DS and if so WHAT do i tell him? All this time we have been going to see the doctors i have been telling him its to find out why he gets angry....what do i say now? Does anyone know of any child friendly books or web sites i can look at with him?

OH and thankyou so much guys for seeing me through one of the hardest things ive had to deal with....without MN support and all you amazing ladies telling me i was not to blame and not imagining it my son would not be in the position he is in now and be closer to the help he so desparately needs.

i cant remember how old your ds is bonkerz but my ds was 10 when we told him, a few weeks after his dx, and we used the red book about AS on the link that twocutedarlings has posted.

see DS is 8 and knows he has a problem with getting angry. Im not sure how much he actually understands though TBH, I think he knows he is different but cannot honestly say he actually cares about it too much IYKWIM

we told DS1 when he was about 10 too, we explained because he was getting so frustrated and angry about stuff that didnt come easily to him. We also explained that it was also a good reason to try harder, not an excuse not to do something. we also had to give the same talk to DS2 when it was discovered he had dyslexia - actually he was quite pleased, he thought he was somehow 'thick' or 'useless' because certain things didnt come easily to him either. sorry to digress.

Oh, it's such a mixed time!
I am so pleased for you, because it's what he is and the dx he needs, and it will open up more help. But also because I know how, when it comes down to it, the label of ASD opens up doors, BUT we don't want our sons to have this condition.

Hahahahaha to the LEA though - that's their Tribunal position screwed!

Would be really interested to see his ADOS scores/ comments/ outcomes after what you said he was like in the appointment.

It is the right result. Really pleased for you and for B and how this will open up the right school for him.

Phew. Its such a relief to know isn't it?
You can finally start to live with ASD instead of living with a child with unidentified problems.
I remember getting the diagnosis for DD. It did not necessarily open any doors, but it did provide her caregivers a better picture of who she is.
My DD is 6 and as yet we have not told her she has ASD. I don't think her cognitive capacity can cope with it.

ados scores were (if i remember correctly)

module 1: 14
module 2: 22
module 3: 3

think the cut offs were 8 /11/3 so he met all 3 modules.

on the ADI-R he hit the first 2 very high and missed the last cut off by 1 point. does that make sense?

ADI score does, but not the ADOS cos the scoring on J's was only out of 22 overall, but I get the picture!

rang the LEA who were insistant that they wanted to see the report before making any decisions. I read it to her over phone and also read her the report from PRU which said they also noted lots of problems etc along the ASD lines and that shocked her a little cos PRU telling LEA DS is making friends/ok with routine etc! our chat ended with her saying we would probably get our school and she would get it back to panel ASAP!! Still reckon we will be at appeal in september UNLESS they offer the ASD unit up the road!

obviously pripry would be fantastic BUt i do think DS would be better in the unit and then he can have full access to the MS. Also means DD could go to the same school!

So which one are you asking for at Tribunal?

If the LEA are sensible, they'll agree to the mainstream as it's far cheaper for them and avoids the Tribunal. He could start in September then! How good would that be?!

am asking for the priory school at tribunal BUT have made it clear to the LEA that if he can get into the unit /MS school i would prefer that! hopefully they will read the docs report and see it makes sense and go back to panel before the appeal.

got an email today from the LEA and apparently they have organised to go back to panel on monday to discuss DS!!! They woulod have recieved the report and diagnosis yesterday and i also sent them an email with all the late evidence i have submitted to SEDINST for the appeal. Whats the betting that they offer DS a special school?
