I got some t shirts from autism awareness uk (think it's autismawarenessuk.com) which were not of the 'stop staring variety' but say in big letters 'I'm not naughty I have autism' and various other things, but think they have some more ahem forthright slogans too. They have really helped to stop the tutting though when DS won't move from doorways (Leeds Armouries, Eureka, Magna) has to be carried across to our table in McDonalds (our local one - he is over 5 ft tall) is shoving littlies out of the way in the sand pit for toddlers (local park, theme park in Wales, centreparcs) so then I don't have to get with them for being inconsiderate

Half an hour we were stuck in Currys while they searched for the laptop we had reserved (ds has just killed the previous one and we go on holiday Saturday and NEED a laptop!)By the time they had found it ds had totally used up the limited waiting skills he has.

As there was only 1 person serving we were the entertainment. By the time it arrived I was physically exhausted. On the positive side we managed to get a Thomas PC game thrown in free.

Most the time these days I am immune to the stares but sometimes it really gets to me.

Understand and share your desire for anonymity but I guess we don't stand a chance!

Yeah, dontcha just love being the centre of attention? If I could have a pound from everyone who's ever tutted, shaken their heads, or decided to reprimand me or DS, I'd hire a bloody nanny to look after him.

Growls and bad vibes to everyone who's ever stared!!!

All DS2 ever does is flap, run in circles and make the occasional awful phlegm hawking noise but we still get stared at. I tend to do very exaggerated and completely spurious Makathon signing - seems to do the trick!

Love the tshirts wedgiesmum! Useful site, actually. DD isn't ASD but I was still looking for something to attach to her clothing with name/address/phone no. as I had a panic the other day when I thought she was lost in a shopping centre and I realised that she had no way of communicating her name to someone if she got lost! The thing I usually get is well meaning people trying to intervene when I'm shouting at DD. The only "no" she understands is at top volume. Same with when she's zoned out and I have to SCREAM "COME" in order to get her to snap out of it. However, being a foreigner has its advantages as the French just assume she's one of those badly behaved English kids!!

I think there is one that says 'I'm autistic, what's your problem?'

I don't think I'd put ds1 in a t-shirt (although he has a t-shirt for IAN (interactive autism network and it would be interesting to see if there's less staring when he's wearing that).

He was being bloody awful yesterday. Pterodactyl screeching in a lighthouse and hitting and kicking me in the street (and pinching - he has worked out I can't ket go of him when we're outside so he can pinch my hand hard and there's nothing I can do about it) so I can understand people looking but I do wish that they
a) would not gawp. Look yes, locate the source of the noise, yes but no need for open mouths
and
b) would not talk about him. He's loud and probably wouldn't understand what was being said about him but I do. There's nothing particularly difficult about waiting until out of earshot to have a discussion about him

My bloody neighbour pi**es me off more than anyone. She knows ds2, we are in the 3rd week of the holiday & you would think she would know by now that EVERY time we leave the house he cries & screams as if i'm beating him.
BUT she still insists on standing at her window & watching me battle to get him into his major buggy, or try to walk him (CP & ASD) to the car & strap him in.
Fine have a glance & see what the noise is but why does she watch the entire performance each time.

I honestly don't know why he hates leaving the house, he just does!

Sympathies- ds1 was hammering on the (dodgy) window of his brother's room recently and when I went to stop him started shouting and hitting me and hitting the window. This passing family stopped, turned around and just stood staring as I tried to get him away from the window. I did stop myself flicking them the V's (although I was muttering) - spent half the day thinking that social services were going to turn up (actually hoping they were as I could have given them merry hell about the windows).

Oh. They have passed them. But they have nwow decided that the quote I want them to use (we'll pay the extra), the quote that they have had for 8 weeks is NOT PRINTED ON THE CORRECT PAPER.

So I have had to track down double glazing salesman and get him to reissue the SAME quote on the correct paper.

FFS.

DS2 is whinging the whole time that he can't go into his bedroom to play(the door has to be locked unless someone is in there to supervise ds1).

Anyway once they have the quote on the correct paper they will say we can go ahead But the correct paper is apparently very important and without it nothing can happen.

Pity they didn't tell me that 8 weeks ago when I sent them the quote.

What beaurocracy (sp) no wonder everything in this country costs so much & takes so long.

Does the correct paper have to be blood stained & in triplicate

On the rare occasion on holiday last week when we were actually managing to blend in at a swimming pool I suddenly realised I was still wearing my bra under my swimsuit - there's just no avoiding stares in our family!

Last time I took ds swimming I thought I'd done quite well getting both of us to the poolside in one piece after wrestling him into his cozzie, managing the locker one-handed, that sort of thing. Unfortunately I didn't realise I still had on my wooden bead necklace and just as we stepped into the 'lagoon' ds grabbed hold of it snapping the elastic. Then he legged it back to the changing rooms.
'Blending in', What's that? .

Report
Seuss · 10/08/2008 07:50

I say blending but that kind of assumes everyone else was letting out an ear piercing shriek every few minutes (ds) or chasing children around the pool like some kind of Benny Hill sketch with bra flying out from under arm-pits (me).

JJ - I did giggle when you wrote flicking the 'v's' Dh is the only other person I know who says that.
<br /> Maybe you should flick a few v's' at people and they may think twice about staring - or how about poking your tongue out
