DD Having A Bad Week

Why is it that just when you're feeling more positive things take a downward spiral? Had a really distressing couple of weeks with dd (my little girl is 4 and has severe autism- I know there are lots of new people on here!). She's had this awful ear infection that I think is a continuation of one from November. She's been screaming in pain and pain relief hasn't been touching it. All her autistic behaviours have become accentuated and it's been really distressing. She looks awful and keeps 'blanking out'. She won't eat and keeps spitting all her food out and rolling her eyes. She's not been sleeping and has had a couple of really 'hyper' nights. In the end, after much soul-searching, I gave her the antibiotics I've been avoiding since last November (not augmentin but V strong and loads of warnings on them for under-18s etc). Initially felt like I had really let her down as she's had the same bug in her ear since November. Now she's had a bad reaction to them (skin rash, throwing up, lethargy, loss of appetite) and the doctor has told me to stop them. She's so fed up and 'not with us'. We've been referred to an ENT specialist. It's upsetting me so much that she's so out of sorts. DH very stressed out and has found it very hard. Just wanted to offload...

Sorry to hear dd is under the weather - hope you're both feeling better soon.

Davros Mon 07-Feb-05 17:00:20

SOrry to hear this JakB. Know what you mean about when you're feeling more positive...... at least I've found the "complementary" bad times less bad over the years iyswim. So what are they suggesting you do in the meantime? No antibiotics at all and just wait for an ENT appt?

JakB Mon 07-Feb-05 17:19:34

Ah! Thanks for the kind words. Fio, yep, I was sort of dreading school as had been wrapped up in my ABA comfort blanket but now I'm looking forward to it as I know it's a great place. Yep, Davros, no antbiotics and wait for the ENT appointment. I think we're going to try and go back to the doctor who did the grommets op back when dd was 18months. We may be able to get in next week (at a cost!) whereas we will have to wait for an NHS appointment. Poor poppet.

Good Luck with getting the ENT appointment. So sorry to hear about your poor little dd - she has really been through the mill with these recurrent ear infections hasn't she?

We had a six week bout of the damn things before xmas and that was bad enough, so can only imagine how its been for you. Hope it gets sorted real soon

Hugs to you, your dh and little dd JakB {{{{{ }}}}}}

So so hard looking after little ones who are poorly and upset and can't be comforted. Very wearing on everyone - you must be exhausted and probably emotionally wrecked .

Really hope you manage to get things sorted out soon.

Poor dd. I hope ENT will be able to do something to help her soon.

JakB, so sorry to hear your dd is suffering, it must be miserable for her. Hope you're not too worn out by it all.

I know I might sound like the chief PR for homeopathy this week (have put something on another thread about it already) but have you thought about trying this while you're waiting for the ENT appointment? I only say this because ds had an ear infection a couple of months ago, his ear was weeping and sticky - homeopath gave him a remedy and it cleared up in a couple of days. It wasn't as severe as what your poor dd's going through - but might be worth a try?

Hi JakB - I'm so sorry to hear your little girl isn't well and I know how stressful it can be on the whole family when you can't comfort them and when waiting for an appointment. I really hope she is feeling better soon and please look after youself as well. Take care.

JakB Tue 08-Feb-05 08:49:51

Heh beccaboo, yep, I'm very excited about the possibility of homoepathy being able to help. Going this Thursday for our initial appointment so will keep you posted.

JakB Tue 08-Feb-05 08:50:17

ps Thanks for all the lovely messages. DD a bit brighter this morning now she's off the antbiotics

ThomCat Tue 08-Feb-05 10:24:48

Only just seen this JakB, poor ickly mite, and poor you. Glad to hear she's brighter this morning. That must mean you're brighter too right??? Lots of love, TC xx

Hi JakB, So sorry to hear you've all been having such a rough time. My sister was very prone to ear infections when she was young and I know how dreadful they can be. I'm glad dd is feeling a bit better today and is hopefully on the mend.

I've just had to pick ds up from school as he has a temperature. I didn't like to keep him off with 'just a cold' so now I feel like a bad mother! At least I haven't got to cope with a younger one as well like you have.

oh and please don't be dreading school. Your dd will love it I'm sure and you will be amazed at how she comes on. Trust me!

JakB Tue 08-Feb-05 16:53:02

Ta chucks. DD MUCH brighter today- got her old spirit back. Homoepath booked Thursday, ENT specialist booked next Monday

JakB - I have very little experience with ear infections but am so glad to hear dd has got her old spirit back. Poor wee thing - hope she is ear infection free soon. Hope the ENT and homeopathy do some good.

Merlot Tue 08-Feb-05 21:17:10

Hi JakB - Glad your dd is brighter today Have you ever taken your dd to a cranial osteopath? I had a really positive visit to one today with ds2 - I am trying to think of ways to budge his glue ear (which led to the myriad of ear infections before Xmas). The CO was really positive and optimistic about being able to help - guess time will tell

pixel Tue 08-Feb-05 23:13:20

If you do want to try a CO ds went to the Dolphin clinic in New Road (next to the Theatre Royal)when he was a tiny baby. We both loved it. Ds because he just relaxed and then slept all the way home, me because I got to sit for half and hour in blissful silence.

Got a feeling you've mentioned it before though, in which case ignore me!

maddiemo Wed 09-Feb-05 13:18:22

Hope she is feeling perkier. Hope the appointments go well. We see a homeopath on the NHS and it has really helped my sinus problems.

Eulalia Wed 09-Feb-05 13:42:25

Oh poor thing, I feel guilty now for starting a self-pitying thread... I am glad she is getting better now.
