Poor ds3 is having a terrible xmas

Ds3,6,who is autistic has been ill since xmas eve. He is very lethargic and has not moved from sofa or bed. He has a high temp, very bloodshot sore eyes and is not eating and barely drinking.

We called em doc today who sent him to A&E. DH took him as I had taken the other boys out for some fresh air.

Dh has just called to say they are keeping him in and starting IV antibiotics and running blood tests. I don't know anything else as dh only left his bedside for a minute to make the call home.

I am going in to stay with him. He does not tolerate antibiotics very well so I am worried about the effect on him.

This was the first year that I felt he had an idea about xmas so I am sad that he has not been well enough to enjoy it.

hope he is feeling better. dh had iv antibiotics last wek and his veins kept collasping. make sure if he screams in pain (i'm not sure how far on the spectrum your ds is) that they remove the IV as it can be very very painful.

Thank you for all your messages.

I am home for tonight and dh is staying with ds3.
He is dehydrated and is on a saline drip.
The hospital have recorded him as allergic to penicillin and have given him different antibiotics which he seems ok with. He is on huge dose as his nose has swollen up to about four times its usual size. If the swelling in his nose has not gone down by tomorrow they will operate under a GA as they are concerned the cartlidge in his nose will be destroyed by infection.
His throat is badly infected too. Last night his SATs were low and his heart rate high but this seems to be improving well.
He woke up at about 7.00pm and seemed much more aware of his surroundings. He peered at the nurse examining him and said "How many months?" Meaning "how old are you?" He loves knowing peoples age so this is a good sign.
At the moment we have been told he will stay in for a few more days. I will go in tomorrow and stay the night.

Thanks once again for your support

Thanks for the update. Will keep fingers crossed that the swelling has gone down by the morning. I liked the "How many months?" question.

Thanks to everyone again. I am at home at the mo. Ds3 is still in hospital with no home coming date in sight.

He had sugery on Wednesday. They found a massive abscess up his nose, which has destroyed the cartilage.
The ENT team feel that he has suffered a fairly severe trauma to the nose at some point and this is what has caused the abscess. DS3 never tells us when he is ill or when he has been hurt. This has been quite a problen at school recently on which I shall post a new thread asking wise mumsnetters advice when all is well.

He is still on IV antibiotics and may need a further op in the next few days. The ENT team said this kind iof abscesss is rare in a child and they want to keep a close eye on him. He may also need sugery as a teen to reconstruct his nose.

He has coped pretty well. Luckily he has his own room and ensuite. He is feeling better because when the Doctor and Nurse appraoch he has taken to screaming "Go away Dr Nurse" and also a phrase he has picked up from his older brothers "Why you little......".

Poor ds3. I hope he's allowed home as soon as possible.

Ds1 still doesn't tell us when things hurt either. We only know he's ill if he has a temperature. He would quite literally walk around with a broken leg, I'm sure.

We are home.

Ds3 has a carrier bag full of medication and needs to rest for two weeks. We go back to the hospital to see the surgeon on the 10th.

He is much better in himself. He has lost a lot of weight but I am sure will make it up eating lots of xmas choc.

I feel that I can now say HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

maddiemo - so pleased that you have your son home with you. At least you don't need to make those hospital visit anymore - they can be so tiring. Have fun with your family. xx
