Nanny looking for SN experience

anyoneoutthere · 17/02/2008 19:22

I have been nannying for about 10 years, but i have no special needs experience. I would very much like to gain this - but how? Special needs agencies wont take me on without it
Any ideas how to start? Im in the Croydon area - but happy to travel

Have you tried SNAP childcare? Our (wonderful) nanny came through SNAP, she had 10+ years experience but no direct SN experience. It wasn't a problem for us .

Have you tried volunteering in any of the sen schools?

Hi
SNAP said they wouldnt take me on without SN experience. I need to keep working in the week (morgage, bills etc...!!), so schools are out of the picture

I really enjoy working as a nanny and it seems quite a drastic move just to get some experience

What about volunteering at a Phab club? I suspect a lot of them meet in the evenings?

Phab clubs

Or offer to do some voluntary work at a hospice/ local respite centre maybe?

Why not have a look on nannyjob, if I wasn't going through SNAP that would be my first port of call.

Have you asked SNAP how their nannies get their SN experience? Everyone has to start somewhere

Report
anyoneoutthere · 18/02/2008 17:41

Ive tried nannyjob and there doesnt seem to be anything

SNAP suggested i worked as a mothers help for a family who had a child with SN before being in sole charge - hardly helpful!!

Gasp! We're in East Sussex, near Lewes and we really need to employ someone to help out with ds2, who's 9 and autistic. What are you thinking of, we've just started looking and we're not really sure yet how much time, etc., we'd want, but I'd love to meet. Don't know how to do msn, let me go away and find out how to swap some details with you?

What about a mothers help role at the weekends? I know that this would be hard graft if you're already working full-time, but some families just want an extra pair of hands on a Saturday every other week (for example), or on an even more adhoc basis than that. If you could stick that for six months then you'd have the experience that you need.

Or, what about volunteering at Richard House - they are based in Beckton, East London (easy on the DLR from Greenwich ) and offer volunteer positions as play assistants:

Hi Chonky

Yes - i am desperately looking for a nanny or mothers help role at the weekend, but cant find anyone looking

It would take me about 2.5 hrs to get to Beckton - so a bit too far. That would have been great though

Anyoneoutthere - why not try creating a new thread with a title like 'Nanny looking for SN experience - happy to nanny/ babysit/ be a mothers help at weekends (SE London area)? I bet you'll have your hands bitten off. If you were in the SW I'd snap you up

Hi,

This might be too full on for you, but I need someone to move in to be sole carer with my 2 yrs 8 months son with quad cp while I'm in hospital for a week from the 21st May then for a few weeks when I come home (with new baby). We live in Brighton (well, Hove). You'd have your own bedroom/bathroom and a car. He doesn't have any medical needs, and three days he'd be at nursery, one morning you could take him to Conductive Ed. He's a bright boy who's main needs are proper pelvic positioning, transferring from chair to walker to trike to potty etc and lots and lots of playing, taking to park at the end of the road etc. You'd get LOADS of experience. Will be advertising the position soonish, but I'd love to see your CV if you're interested?

We have a special needs play monthly saturday club (also called snap). I think Mencap help finance it. Perhaps there is a similar club local to you?

Report
anyoneoutthere · 26/02/2008 14:38

Thanks for that. Ive looked on the council website and there is nothing.
I also asked my local childrens information centre and they dont know if anything on the weekends.
Phab also have nothing on weekends.
Its so frustrating!
