2 Year 10 Month - Limited Speech / Confused / Need Advice

I have a son who is 2 years 10 months. His speech is limited to around 10-20 words. However, he has full understanding and can follow instructions and able to all other ways. He has had multiple hearing tests - all clear for glue ear and hearing issues. He has also had an eye test - again clear, and sleep test to check breathing - again clear. He was sent finally from the ENT to a paeditrician who said it was just speech delay with no other issues. I personally spoke late as a child - as the age of 3, and I am thinking maybe it is genetic. My son goes to a nursery at the moment, 5 days a week for 3 hours a day. In April, he will start a new prep school when he turns 3, and he will be going 5 days a week, 7 hours a day, and I am hoping that will assist him with his speech. We have been working with a Private Speech Therapist over the last month or so. She is fantastic but pricey, but I feel her sessions are the same as what my wife and I do. She does not do anything my wife and I do not do, and my wife and I both feel these sessions are not useful or valuable. We have no issues spending the money (as we are spending a lot on the prep school) but we feel the speech therapy is what we do, and more advice rather than therapy. The therapist assesses my wife for 20 minutes of the 1 hour session to tell my wife where she is going right or wrong. However, she tells my wife shes good and no feedback but talks and talks. She does do around 30 minutes interactive things with our son, but my wife and I both feel we do all of these activities ourselves everyday. I guess what we are torn about is - should we continue with this private speech therapist or not? Is it really going to make the difference? We do not mind spending if we could fast forward 2 years and see that it made a difference, but we both are on the edge. We feel that we do all these activities and the private therapy does not do a lot. I guess we feel that our son will talk when he is ready and there is no issues there - and he will be full time at the school from April so is a speech therapist needed. One thing we considered was some form of autism and maybe that is a factor. Having read everything online, we both feel our son does not show any signs of this at all, and we even asked the Private Therapist, together with a NHS therapist we saw. They both told us that they felt he does not have autism. I dont know whether we should pursue this angle, or just accept he has delayed speech and let him develop at his own pace. We are also torn on whether to continue the private speech therapist. The NHS therapist was seeing our son during term time in a group environment, but these is now a large queue to see them again. Any thoughts would be really appreciated.
