Tantrums leading to breathing difficulties in toddler with airway issue

DS (3) has a collapsing airway, and has had various emergency admissions since he was born. Generally he's been improving, as is expected to some extent.

Recently he's had an increase in breathing issues due, we think, to allergies, which put extra stress on his floppy airway, and also he has had an increase in tantrums, but at the end struggles to breath.

We're aware that he will sometimes play up his cough because he knows it will make us pay attention, but he gets out of control on these tantrums and seems genuinely scared by his difficulty breathing at the end.

Anyone with DC with similar, or severe asthma, have any ideas how to handle this?

So far we sit with him and try to get him to concentrate on slowing his breathing. By the end he's frightened (as are we) and obviously gets cuddles, which is not helping with preventing the tantrums.
