Hope it's OK to post here. I don't have a child with SN, but one of my daughter's new best friends uses a wheelchair. They have all just moved up to high school, so I've never met DD's friend or her parents. As far as I can gather from DD, her friend uses a motorised wheelchair most of the time and a walker some of the time and has some difficulties with fine motor movements too (DD has spoken about helping her on an art project). Although I don't know the precise nature of her underlying condition, I think she probably has cerebral palsy as DD says her friend was born very premature.

DD's birthday is soon and she would like to invite some friends round, including her friend who uses a wheelchair. In their friendship group, they usually just text each other to organise their plans (rather then include the parents) but I'm thinking it would make sense to also ask for the friend's mum's mobile number so I can get in touch with her about a few practicalities - one step up to the house, 8 steps down to the garden, loo on the ground floor quite a small room and won't take the wheelchair etc, just to make sure we can offer any help or adjustments that her friend needs to be able to join in. As a parent of a child with SN, would you appreciate this or find it just odd and "othering"? Or is there another way you could suggest I approach this?

I think any parent would appreciate you involving their child and accomodating their needs. Personally I cant see any problem with you asking for her parents number to discuss it further. x

Thanks. I'll do that. I have form for overthinking things, but I'm sure you're right.
