Laptop for school

Hi, I can't find a section on Mumsnet for asking about laptops but I thought I might try here. My son (AS, 12yo in year 8) has a statement, in which it's recommended that he uses a keyboard as much as possible. The school have no money to provide it and I can't be arsed fighting that battle so I've said I'll provide it. If anyone else's child has a small (11.5" screen) uncomplicated CHEAP laptop for school, I'd love to get a recommendation. I'm clueless re computer specs and my stress levels at the mo are making me even more clueless! (Also if you think somewhere else on Mumsnet would be better to ask this, do say!)

Dd3 had a chrome book when she was at school. But you really shouldnt be buying it yourself! The school will have had funding for him via his statement!

Thanks Ineed. I just can't wait the months it will take to get the school to do it. At the end of my tether. Need to work out whether to keep DS in this school or not so need the laptop asap to see if it's a breakthrough for him in terms of accessing curriculum etc

Ds has a small touch screen laptop/notebook from school (year 4). He uses specialist software (clicker). We had thought about buying him one but it would not be insured in school and they didn't want to take responsibility for ours, he also wouldn't be able to access the Internet at school with a 'home' laptop (including printer).

I know what you mean OP. They have a real Catch-22 going with this one. Seems to me that in order to qualify for a laptop you need to be so severely affected that you wouldn't actually be able to use it!
