Psychologist while on ADHD waiting list?

Anyone got any experience of seeking treatment from a child psychologist for behavioural problems - did it help?

Would it muddy the water for ADHD assessment?

DS is on waiting list for ADHD assessment. Behaviour has got worse at school, more aggressive. At screening appointment the nurse said "it's not screaming ADHD at me" but referred us for full assessment so it can be ruled in or out. I've rung to chase the appointment and was lucky enough to speak to the nurse who did his screening and he won't be seen until November/December. She agrees it could be behavioural/emotional and perhaps he just can't cope with some element of school life (he is much better at home).

I am seeing a child psychologist privately next week for an initial appointment to see if they can help. School educational psychologist has a full caseload and is not taking on new cases. Nurse said they recommend not starting anything like that as it muddies the water for the assessment, but acknowledged that another 6 months is a long time for a child (or indeed anyone) to feel like a failure at school and become increasingly isolated from their peers.

Any advice?

I'm not convinced he has ADHD. He is on the waiting list because I explained to the GP the issues DS was having, they referred me to CAMHS who have gone down this road. I'm hoping that their assessment, whether or not ADHD is diagnosed, gives some suggestions of things that will help him to do better at school. I am not fixed on getting a diagnosis, I'm fixed on getting to the point that he is happy at school and more or less achieving his potential. I'm just not sure what else I can do while the cogs turn over on the waiting list.

Maybe that wasn't helpful. Lots of things have been considered. It always seems like he has signs of this and signs of that but not enough of anything to look clear cut. Bit ASD, bit sensory processing disorder. I'm just hoping CAMHS can shed some light.
