Snap! I just posted on another thread about a whole series of workshops being run for LAs on EHCP writing - www.sendpathfinder.co.uk/education-health-and-care-plan-workshops - which seems to be part of the same thing and is quite interesting.

It does seem quite ironic that the government refused to prescribe what EHCPs should look like but is now spending a fortune with management consultants telling them precisely that.

Having said that, things like those outcomes look so much better than what most LAs are currently producing. However, I wish they didn't recommend putting them in a table with provision linked to outcomes as the code of practice emphasises that the priority is for provision to meet needs.

I must admit I am slightly confused how provision can be made to reach outcomes I have been thinking alot about this! I suppose if the outcome is linked to needs and is supporting movement towards independence then it could work!

If not the provision is going to be confusing and LA's have enough trouble with it already! Confused

The code of practice says that an outcome is "the benefit or difference made to an individual as a result of an intervention." I've heard it said that it would make more sense therefore for outcomes to come after section F, because it's what you're trying to achieve through the provision in section F, and that does seem to make some sense.

I have been thinking about independent travel as an outcome for Dd3!

She would need lots of work on confidence, verbal skills, planning, organisation etc! She needs to work on all these things anyway so the independent travel would be a lovely end to a few yrs of hard work for her, us, her setting (if she returns to one)!

Who knows! We have only had a statement since September 15 so I dont feel ready for all this!

Sounds a reasonable outcome to me. They're supposed to help children work towards independence.

And when I say independent travel, I mean a few well known destinations not round the world Grin

Via ABA we have always had SMART targets and outcomes so its not been a big change for us. But our Council has gone down the route of it all being about outcomes and i've argued that risks ignoring needs. Because not everything is about improvement or learning a new skill, sometimes its just about maintaining the status quo

One of my child's needs is that he is safe and kept in a locked environment. Thats a need that requires a certain amount of provision. if I had to draft that as a outcome I would have to say something like the proposed outcome is that school does not let DS escape onto the road and he is still alive and well this time next year!

I think outcomes become even more objectionable for adult social care where every bit of provision has to have an outcome - why do you need to achieve things every year - can't you just live your life like anyone else.

Then there is the risk of setting outcomes which are not achieved and having the provision removed because the outcome isn't achievable…
