Herbal alternative to movicol

Hi there fellow mumnetters,

my son has suffered from constipation for 2 years, as had tests in hospital and put on high doses of movical and sodium picosulphate, but there has been little or no improvement in his symptoms, so I am thinking of looking at holistic/herbal remedy alternatives-so is there any recommendations of where I could look for this info?

I know it sounds like heresy in this day and age, bear in mind you're using the ingredient as a medicine and only giving it occasionally.

If you give him something that's intensely rich and sweet with actual sugar, it should do the trick e.g. the type of drinking chocolate that you just add water to, try making that around one and a half times stronger than they advise on the packet. If the first dose didn't work, I'd give that twice within about 3 hours, then don't let him stray far from the bathroom.

Otherwise figs, prunes, other foods 'whole' not peeled and sterile.

Does he drink enough plain water, dehydration can cause constipation.

Does he have hypermobility? It's a fairly new theory, but kids that do seem to have a high incidence of constipation.
