Doing ABA/occupational therapy yourself (3 yr old, severe ASD), any advice?

Hi,

My child has been diagnosed as severely autistic in the last few months, and once I got my head around it I've just sprung into action! I'd really, really appreciate any advice.

I've read, researched, looked into ABA, and after trial and error now do 2-3 hours a day of a combination of RDI, PRT and others. Some at the table, some on bean bags. I have him sit with me for quiet stories, and take him out to soft play/parks and walks. I keep some things routine, some I am expanding. My son likes to control everything and so any little direction/change throws him into meltdown.

And I have to say it's going great! I mean, it is really tough. I'm lucky because I'm a SAHM but we have little money so can't pay anyone. But I'm finally getting him to ask for things for the first time ever (only rarely but hey!), and trying to encourage him to put two words together (once or twice, but a start!). He's started to say goodbye, at last!

My son is verbal but only nouns, very litttle understanding of language, very rigid behaviours and routines, hates noise, sensory issues. He can't understand a basic 'Give me... '. I can't take him to playgroups as he goes mental, and in shops if we walk not in a straight line he cries.

I'd like - a supervisor for me that will meet me half way rather than just give me a brand new programme. And to know, what are the priorities? What really works?

Have you thought about trying to get funding from the LA? My DC had a programme for about 7 years. It is extremely hard work - hats off to you! I used to do one session a week when we had UKYAP as our provider. If your son is benefitting from 2-3 hours a day,think what having a whole team could do for him.
