Trike or Bike for 3 year olds with ASD?

deadwitchproject · 26/12/2015 10:30

My DTs will be 3 next month and we're thinking about getting them a trike or a bike with stabilisers but not sure which will be better. We've ruled out scooters for now as think they will need more stability (particularly DT1). Or perhaps we should go for a scooter?

DT2 has good gross and fine motor skills. DT1 is ok with his gross motor skills but still struggles to climb and his fine motor skills are ok but we're working on helping him improve.

Any recommendations for which is better and for any particular brand? TIA Smile

What about balance bikes? They are much better for children to gain confidence without the complication of pedals.

another vote for balance bike. I would stay way from a bike with stabilisiers. balance bikes (provided they can balance) are great and a brilliant step to learning to cycle. and tbey are fast. really good for gaining confidence.

both of my DC were on balance bikes until 4.5 and then moved onto a pedal bike without the need for stabilisiers as they were confident balancing by then.

I don't even think they need to be able to balance choc at first they can just walk while sitting on the seat as they do with those push along toys!

We had some at the preschool I worked at and they were a big hit Smile

Get helmets though whatever you buy OP!

Thanks everyone, I hadn't even thought of a balance bike. They're reasonably priced too.

I like the look of the scooter too though, maybe one of each...something to think about.

Any recommendations for helmets? Halfords or Argos? DT1 has a massive head so I guess I would need to have him measured for a helmet.

usually helmets are for a certain circumference but you can easily measure the circumference at home with a tape measure. Amazon has lots too if you don't fancy going round the shops.

I tend to order bike stuff for me and the kids of wiggle.com

Try to get helmets with a wheel adjuster thingy at the back so you can tighten\loosen it easily!

Do you have a Decathlon store near you? They usually have a good assortment of helmets.

OP, you can always take the DC to halfords/Evans/decathlon and let them test drive. Might give you some better pointers before you spend lots of £££.

Great pointers, thank you. Don't have a Decathlon but have a Halfords nearby so will take the DTs for head measurements. I think they're going to love the balance bike!
