Hi,have been given ds's IEP to look at & sign and all of it is fine really and we're happy to scribble our names on the bottom.

My sticking point is the 'target' for ds and soiling. He is not in control of this and quite obviously we have done everything we can to help ds with this, inc speaking to gp,I'm not sure that I want to sign for targets which ds really can't control- it's pointless.

School are fairly good, they are terribly caring but grumpy when challenged.

So:
A- sign the bastard bit of paper because it really doesn't make the slightest difference.

B- go back and talk to school and explain again that it is not the same as poor handwriting or needing to learn all your tables.

What would you do?

(ds has sensory difficulties and asc traits and is bloody awesome)

I'd point out targets are meant to be SMART. therefore attainable with a timescale.

If a child has incontinence issues that are medical it's unlikely they could acheive this. id suggest something more attainable.

Even handwriting ones are pointless IMO. Improving control (therefore making writing more legible) using OT techniques or a programme such as write dance is ok - but some people always have messy handwriting - even as adults.

An example of DS targets. "Ask talking partner appropriate questions due ing discussion time". Target then broken down to with support, prompts, independently and from 1 question to for whole 5 minutes.

Then a seperate target of listening to response partner during discussion time. Broken down again.

Then finally it was to ask appropriate questions in response to talking partners answers.

Of course it's hit and miss but he can manage it fairly well now for short periods. It's now beginning to extend into his ability to hold very short! conversations before turning it to his interests!

Ladies, you are awesome Flowers Knew you'd get it.

I'm going to think it through over 1/2 term, when I'm a bit less knackered and grumpy. I might re word and then sign - not sure. That way I still have leeway to lose it entirely if it all goes tits up next year.

Sigh.

Not annoying. I thought it was a good one but it was my mum (a retired teacher) who pointed the legible thing out to me years ago!
