AS/DCD

My son is 10 and has recently had an ASD assessment as I believe he has Aspergers. The findings suggest he doesn't but does have dyspraxia. I think they are mistaken. It has taken me a year to get this far and I am concerned about him transitioning to secondary school in September with an undiagnosed problem. Has anyone been convinced their child is on the spectrum but had an assessment suggest otherwise? What advice might you have for my next move?

There's an overlap between DCD and AS. My son's paediatrician thought that he had AS but the OT disagreed (as did I because ds didn't tick enough of the boxes for AS). Either way, they should be helping your son with any problems that he has, so the name of the condition doesn't matter.

Personally, I would be asking for a second opinion. You are the parent and I find are the best advocate for your child. Was this a developmental paediatrician?

If possible, try to keep a diary with the behaviours, what happened just before and how you dealt with them.

You could always start using ASD strategies and see how you get on. It certainly can't do any harm.

Try and do as much research as possible and make examples of any asd behaviours and how they fit the criteria.

In the meantime you have a diagnosis to work with.

We had exactly the same situation ladycybil A knew assesment however concluded that she did in fact have asd. Agree with sweetteamum find all the information you can on ASD and dyspraxia it is really usedsful, for pinpointing what information to include and make your ds's life easier.

It's really tricky to diagnose. Ds has seen 2 paediatricians. One said he didn't and was just very bright and would be happier as an adult as he would be more accepted, one said he did, the OT said he didn't

It was a team decision (CP, OT, SLT) and no professional support has been offered, just sent a few fact sheets. Thank you for the advice

Ds has Dcd. I have always known it's more than that. A indi ep said its asperges.

I can't get him dx on nhs. However looking on nas website my toddlers pead is listed as dx ing asd so I am going to ask her at the toddlers next app.

School ingnored any problems even with a classic autistic child there so useless I win a ehcp there is no rush for me until he starts secondary as the local secondary do care

My school are useless but knowing my sons needs we can give him great support at home. We rarely have conflicts as he is treated as if he does have asd.

You can get second opinions. I have just had extremely poor help with nhs and school. To me the dx isn't going to change anything as the care is so poor. Sorry that's no help to you.

You have to persue every option until your options are done. It's hard but keep on fighting on
