Dyspraxia and ASD?

Hi,

Just wondered if there is a link between DCD (Dyspraxia) and Aspergers?
DS has been just diagnosed with DCD (dyspraxia)

Today at school I spoke to teacher about how DS was doing.
Comments like "Lives in his own wee world", "immature", "reacts to to things like its the end of the world","needs to be more independant" and "jumps into things without thinking or waiting to his turn" and "attention & listening" She asked was a full assessment done".
I think teacher is thinking DS has Aspergers, but obviously cant say it as such.
TBH I do agree with above totally, I just do not trust my judgement on things (I tend to overreact!) so i ignore things until someone else says it! DS is very over sensitive and tends to drift off very freq.

Are these problems associated with Dyspraxia or could we be looking at another diagnois?

I have already contacted SN Paed for another assesment, which will be end next month.

Different spld's can coexist or one may be dominant with traits of another but social issues can also be associated with dyspraxia itself. Someone on here once described them as liek the olympic rings with various overlaps.

I think there are many conditions which can exist alongside each other and overlap.

Dd3 is being assessed for AS and ticks loads of boxes for it, she is also borderline for dyspraxia and has hypermobile joints.

I think the Dx can depend on what the paed notices most or how the reports are presented form OT's and SALT's.

I would go ahead with the assessments, your Ds could end up with several "labels" which will inform the school about what kind of support he is going to need.

ASD, ADHD, Dyspraxia and Dyslexia are all caused by the same thing and most kids have more than one of them.

thanks for all the replys. Bugger that! Is one not enough?
Indigo - I spoke to the school about statement re our recent private messages. The school told me you cant apply for a statement until he is on stage 3 action plan. Is this right? I found senac NI, so the lines open tonight at half seven, so i'll be first in the que.

I don't know the law for NI - but it can't possibly be true, because kids can get a statement before they even start school :)

But get proper legal advice from someone.

Just a small correction. The above statement is wildly incorrect, and without any scientific foundation.

All of these issues have different neurological causes, and anyone can have any combination of co-existing conditions.

My DS was first diagnosed with Dyspraxia (aged 5) and later Aspergers (aged 7). I was told that they were 'co-morbid' conditions and overlapped. If you read about the definitions of both conditions they have a lot of similar symptoms, but are not the same or caused by the same thing.

Hi 8etty8lue, thanks for reply :) Do you mind me asking how your DS is doing? What you found helped and not so much? Theres so much confusing info out there and not enough money nor time to try everthing!
