HELP - DS just diagnosed with ADD poss due to Sensory Processing Disorder (wtg to see OT)

I am due to meet with our SENCO tomorrow to discuss. What sort of help do you receive at school for ADD/SPD?

Any other tips/suggestions would be very appreciated.

Does your DS have a statement?
Reason I am asking is at the moment without a statement my DS is having 1 to 1 at the moment but they are totally useless in helping with the sensory side of things so I am going to need to specify in the statement exactly what DS needs are.

I am still waiting for OT appointment for mine but they did say on the phone that an OT can visit the school to give them ideas on how to help with a sensory diet and such.

Hi money I think it depends on the school really and the child really as to whether a statement is needed. For example my daughter has ADHD and some sensory issues. She has just started a new school for year 3 and they are amazingly supportive and provide a very structured day for her and lots of praise as well as some small additional things like a whiteboard for her to write her memos on and lots of time for her to get up and about. But at her previous school she struggled and the school were totally useless labelling her a naughty child and refusing to help in anyway.
In her current setting they believe praise little and often goes a long way and I have seen massive improvement in her behaviour since attending there. I think you need to note down the main needs and see wht they can do and negotiate and barter from there. Good luck x

No, I do not have a statement. Consultant said they are very stressful & takes along time with no guarantee that you will get one. He said I would have better chance if the school applies for it. Going to see how this meeting goes tomorrow. May I ask how many times a week he gets 1 to 1 and for how long for?

Hi Chundle, yes my DS has also just started year 3 and works well with praise & rewards too. Good advice & thanks for the good luck think I need all I can get. x

DS has permanent 1 to 1 was temporarily funded 15 hrs and school provided the rest. It does all depend on your sons issues as not every child with any dx is the same. My son has SPD and ECD and being assess for AS.

The reasons for his 1 to 1 are a lot of sensory stuff, cannot concentrate and hates crowds or busy places so he will run or become aggressive if cornered.

You really need to assess what you think your sons needs are, what areas in school the Teacher or Senco consider problematic for him, if there are really strong issues that he needs help with and if you can rely on the school being good enough to forefill any promise of help. If he is on SA or SA+ the school can plan a care package as such for him but it is not binding. If he had a statement then it would be. I dont know how old your DS is but there is the senior school move to consider too.

Statements do take a long time that is true but if you feel he needs one then the sooner you apply the better. You can apply yourself and then the LEA will consider wether to assess him or not and they have 6 weeks to tell you their decision on wether to assess.

I would just see what your senco tells you tomorrow. Write down a list of worries your DS may have mentioned to you or any noticable issues you have spotted and see what they say first before you consider any other path of action.
