Ot came in holidays as response to request from me to review seating that was no longer supportive enough. We have three supportive chairs in the house. One is upstairs at my ds desk, a Samsonova and is too heavy to move up and down stairs. He has a Breezi chair at the table to sit at for eating, and another wooden chair in the lounge to watch telly in (which was a freebi incidently). The latter chair I felt my ds had grown out of and was happy to return and asked if I could have one chair that could be wheeled around downstairs, on castors that was height adjustable. The OT felt this was a good idea and said in the meantime she could take the wooden chair in the lounge away and replace it temporarily with a Samsonova chair, that she had in the back of her car, just returned by another family. I was delighted to have another Samsonova chair as he sits beautifully in them, but it would still mean I would need another seat for the table as the Samsonova, doesn't go high enough and nor did the wooden one. I asked her why I could only have it temporarily, presuming the reply would be two Samsonova chairs is a luxury. However, she said that 'we are not allowed to reissue chairs', its policy. So I said 'so where will this Samsonova chair go?' She said, it will sit in a ware-house and come out from time to time for training purposes. Bare in mind it only had a few areas of chipped paint, but looked as good as new. I said 'what a waste, pity they can't go to the third world', (silly I didn't question the silly policy) she said 'well if they haven't been out of the warehouse for a while, they go off to the Carribean !!!! So the NHS is strapped for cash is it, I ask myself and what about those kids in the uk whose parents pay their taxes, who struggle to get any supportive seating from the NHS at all, what is going on here???? I think this requires a few letters to MP's, head of OT services, anyone else got any experiences to share????

Absolutely shocking but not surprising. Almost same thing with feeding pumps............they never take them back and we end up with cupboards full of the things!!!!

Surely refurbing and reissuing is much cheaper than completely new, would help more kids and leave extra dosh to buy other equipment!

Utterly gobsmacked! Shock

I totally agree the whole thing is such a waste. Throwing money down the drain when there is nothing wrong with these items.

And you have situations like the Blindcraft factory in Edinburgh - a factory which offers training and jobs to people who have sight-disabilities - which is closing because of lack of subsidy and the fact people aren't buying their products much at the moment. This kind of work could easily be transferred to this kind of facility and everyone wins!

Grrr, it's just the complete lack of joined-up thinking that annoys me!

I don't geddit. If the chairs aren't 'safe' for people in the UK, what is it about people in the Caribbean that makes it okay to give them unsafe things?

And if they ARE safe, why aren't they kept here?

I don't think it's an issue of safety, but i suspect thatt hey will say that they can't guarentee their safety as thay arn't new, but more of a people don't like second-hand!
The first bit of equipment we got was a standing frame, which had obviously been used before, not bothered in the slightest, it had all been taken to pieces and cleaned.
All the other bits of equipment after that has been new, this includes a jenx junior chair (£1400), a squiggles seating system(£850), bath seat(£300), Bench (£350), Buggy (£1000) new shoes every 4-5 months!! I'm sure there is more, I feel a bit guilty about the stuff that we have had to get, which is obviously going to waste when we have finished with it!!

Here they do re-issue equipment ,some of DS stuff is being used at school and we have been issued with used items. My biggest gripe is regarding feeds. A couple of months ago we were sent 168 bags of wrong milk I rang the supplier and was told they were not allowed to take it back. What about the third world I stupidly asked oh no we can't do that we may sued if there was anything wrong with it!!
Following day knock on door---another 168 bags of wrong milk. I give up.

I am shocked, I know for a fact our local PCT do re-issue equipment so why doesn't yours.

Do you get them on prescription? If you get it on prescription then it counts as a medical product and can't be reissued.
Sometimes they can reuse parts though.
Dd2's prostesis are counted as medical (you need a prescription) and can't be reissued. However the functional ones, although the main part is not reissued, the mechanical part (which is the expensive bit) can be reused. It has a glove over it so that bit's new. The cosmetic prosthesis they don't reuse the hand part though.

The first pair of Piedros DS got were secondhand. Moulded to the shape of someone else's foot...not good

I'm not surprised. DS had a supportive chair bought for him via a charity with the comment that when we had finished it it should go back to physio (who had arranged for it) for another child. But they wouldnt take it back - it needed cleaning/overhauling and apparently the NHS dont do that for stuff they have not bought themselves. Mad. We couldnt find anyone who wanted it, so it ended up in the tip.

How ridiculous. Once again lack of rational thought in our health services.
My youngest had a commode (which I'd bought myself), when he'd finished I asked if they wanted it for someone who was struggling to buy one and they said no, it has to be thrown away. It was spotlessly clean, bleached to within an inch of its life and perfect condition.
I had to skip it.

It is all a bit strange..the physio said DD was to get a Maclaren Major, i said we already had a second hand one, he said "well, you are going to get another one" and lo and behold and brand new one was delivered.. Hmm

Not complaining too much as it's great but she had to wait a YEAR for a supportive chair at nursery
