My son has been diagnosed with tourettes and adhd. He is not getting on well in mainstream school. Does anyone know where I can get any information on schools that can cope with children with tourettes?

Depends on were you live but your LEA should be able to let you know what provision there is in your area. D oes your son have a statement ? If you want a special school his statement will have to say that he needs a special school. Does he take medicine to help with tics or behaviour ? How old is he?

A special school caters for children with disabilities. He would have to have a statement to go to a special school. Were you thinking of sending him to another mainstream ? How many hours support are you expecting him to get
when his statement comes through?

His teachers want full time support for him not sure if they will get that!
He is in a very large class at school and he dissrupts the class with his vocal tics that can be loud at times he was being constant with his tics but since the summer holiday began he is gradually getting less and less vocal but motion tics are still there. I dont think the school he is at atb the moment isnt helping him atall.

If school are saying he needs fulltime support make sure thats what it says on his statement or he wont get it. They will send you a proposed statement if you are not happy with it ask them to change it. It is hard for ds being in big classses my son has Autism, ADHD, Dyspraxia and tics he didnt cope well in mainstream so he is now in a special school.

Are there other children like you son in his class now. I think the kids at my son school make it worse by laughing at him and incouraging him to do more tics

Yes he was with children who have similar problems this seemed to work well because he didnt feel so different. He is having to move school in september because they have closed his school down but he will go to another special.
They will put him in a class of either five or six children who have similar ability to him.

Thats good your son has settled well. My son really needs a smaller class.
I am just gonna have to wait to find out what the statement says.
