Benign rolandic epilepsy and SLI

Hi, DD hasn't got a diagnosis yet, waiting for an MRI and neurology appointment but had a letter today saying the eeg she recently had (which had an abnormal result) suggested benign rolandic epilepsy. I've had a quick google an dit seems the outlook could be better than I had expected but it does mention that children with it can have speech problems and learning diffculties which DD has. I am hoping if she does have it that it is the cause of her SLI. In that it seems children can grow out of it. I may be being overly optimistic but wondered if anyone knew more.

ds2 has epilepsy and SLI and I assumed they were linked - not that I've done any research.

Hopefully someone will be along in a minute who knows a lot more than I do!

Hi farming4 I remember talking to you about schools how are you getting on? Does he have the benign rolandic type? Apparently it is the most common form that children have. We don't know for sure yet but the resluts and everything I have read is so familiar. DD has had loads of funny turns when I've woken her up from naps etc.

I can't rememeber, is your DS medicated for it?

Hi usedto - long time no speak! We haven't been given an actual dx yet but the paed is leaning towards either infantile myoclonic or juvenile myoclonic but until we start weaning him off his meds in about 2 years we won't know If its the infant one he should grow out of it but if its the other hes got it for life but we'll deal with that if we have to. He has Orlept which is the sugar free version of Epilim. We were lucky in that he responded to the first drug we tried and hes generally seizure free. Had breakthrough about a mth ago with a couple of absences but have increased his meds and seems to be back under control.

Regards his speech hes now really trying to talk and the words are coming thick and fast!! Not always clear but we can generally work out what hes trying to say. Just fighting to get him statemented but hey thats a whole other story!

Hows your dd getting on - I seem to remember she had an ear prob? Or have I got completely the wrong person?

Hi! That sounds hard having to wait. Its great that his epilepsy has been so well managed though.

DD has had glue ear yes and had grommets a few weeks ago which is already helping her it seems.

Just been through the statementing thing myself! Still upset at the lack of a s and l unit in my area but hopefully the next statement (I asked for changes to the first one) will get her support enough to manage in mainstream for the time being at least.

Had a letter today wih an appointment for end of august with the neurologist which will be prior to the MRI. It feels so obvious to me now that dd has been having seizures but I'll just have to see what happens.

Hi used2be - I have answered at length on your other post, but wanted you to know that for dd1 with benign rolandic epilepsy it did not affect her learning - top set at school etc, and the meds she was on controlled the seizures fine. And she has outgrown it now - 3 years seizure free, and off her meds since January. (Although I never really wanted to believe you could "outgrow" it until she did) Our neurologist said "If you had to have a type of epilepsy, this is the one to have" All the best.

I think nearly everyone outgrows B.Rolandic epilepsy. DS1 has idiopathic epilepsy so we don't know his outcome. He's been seizure free for nearly a year on Keppra. He is pretty bright and (in his teacher's words) excellent at reading and science. So SLI and epilepsy are not neccessarily linked.
