Makaton - do I need to go to a class? Is there a book/dvd that anyone can recommend?

We'd like to learn some makaton as a way of helping ds with speech (he is 1 yr, but delayed, doesn't babble, is waiting to see a SALT). I don't particularly want to start a class, and wondered if there was a book or dvd that anyone could recommend.

Thankyou

sing and sign DVDs are fun, reasonably cheap, and you can pick them up at ELC IIRC. Not sure if the signs are exactly the same as Makaton tho, that's the only problem....

Hi, I did a salt run half day course a couple of years back but I already knew 90% of the signs from watching Mr Tumble with my ds!! I can't thank him enough as it helped ds so much. I have started watching again with dd (16 months) as she is not talking at all yet, I'm also waiting for salt for her.:)

Doh! Of course Catherine, Something Special on CBeebies and the pages about that on BBC website are good for free!

if you don't mind a bit of bsl, there's mobilesign just type the word you're looking for or learn a sign a day or signed stories may be able to pick up some vocab there or deafsign has some freebies including an iphone app or deafeducate has a few bits or bsl or british sign and there's forest books which has a huge range of books and dvds.

also mr tumble magazine, or if you want to buy resources try 'forestbooks,' or go direct to MVDP, who created/own makaton.

ah! just twigged who it is... hi hazyjane, I'm not stalking you either! Grin

can probably look out something for you to borrow... (could leave at saltway for you to collect...) or post direct.. pm if you want.

thankyou, thankyou everyone.

Loads of things to look into. Funnily enough 3 Makaton books plopped through my door today, which my sister had bought me from amazon for my birthday. I was a bit Shock to see that they cost £22 and are tiny, one sign per page, about 20 pages in each book, 3 books. I think I might look at all the things that you lovely people have mentioned and swap them for something else.

I'm glad that none of you said i should go to a class, life is too frantic at the moment! We are recording all the Something Special's, so that we can watch them with the dds, who are going to try and learn it too (which i figure will help ds)

Hahaha at the idea of being stalked, I am far too dull to be stalkable!

Thankyou for the kind offer SignandSmile, I'll pm you.
