I have a first appointment with dr tomorrow to try and get a referral for ds for possible ADHD - what do I need to know?

I have an appointment in the morning with the doctor to discuss ds. Both the school and I think he may have ADHD and they have suggested we need to get a referral by the dr to get him properly assessed. Is there anything I need to know or say?

Is this with your GP? Just go in with your list of concerns. Have it all in writing so you don't forget anything. What would be your ideal outcome? Referral on to a paed etc? Don't leave the room without one, or you'll be so frustrated by another delay. If GP seems to be fobbing you off, cry. Seriously, you'll be emotional anyway, so may as well use it to your advantage.

Just come straight out and say you and school think your son might have ADHD and could he please refer you to a child development paediatrician.

Drs don't normally mind doing this at all. They're not qualified to dx ADHD. They're just meant to refer you on......

thank you both ... I went to bed early last night so didn't see the messages. The dr was ok about it and said he would refer on. I just need to get a statement from the school (which they have already agreed to) plus I think I will put something down in writing myself as I am not sure I was clear enough/he wrote enough down. Fingers crossed I have at least got the ball rolling!

Glad you got what you needed from the appt. When you get your appt through for the paed it may help to send some info about your concerns on to her/him in advance, which they will hopefully read beforehand. Again take a written list of questions, possible outcomes from the appt. You may not (probably won't) get a DX straight off.

With school, is your DS on School action or school action plus?
