DS , 8.9 months, dyslexic, finishing year 3, am worried

He had to write a list of things for me to get him for a sandwich experiment they are doing on friday

have been worried for a bit, been assured he is doing well and getting all the help he needs and progressing nicely... he had a scribe for his sats and gets one to one and sessions with SENCO.

am i right to be worried? or is this 'good enough'?

should i try to squeeze in appointment with SENCO befroe they break up? he gets his school report on friday

It's not as terrible as I have seen (ex teacher of year 4). I can read it and he has used a lot of the correct letters.
But yes, go to see the SENCO and get her to tell you exactly what help he is being given and if he is having any outside help at all.
Is he on the School Action register?

TBH I think this is fine. I have 2 dyslexics and I thought the list was fine -I knew what all those things were

Give him time - dyslexics take time. DD now at end of yr 5 and we are finally begining to see the hours of IN and practice come through. She would written tunna, letis, pitter braede, cheese, chickene. When in doubt she sticks an "e" on the end!

Sound like all the right stuff is being done if Ed Psych is in place.
Reading will always improve first, writing is harder but will follow.
The fact he wants to write now is the majority of the battle.
I'd let it go and see how things are in Year 4. I daresay he will continue to improve.
My brother is dyslexic and, apart from the odd word, you can hardly tell now when looking at his written work. He has learnt lots of coping strategies and he hardly got a lot of support at school. Your DS will be even better!

The spelling looks very familiar to me, as my dd2 is dyslexic, and I wouldn't worry too much about it especially if his reading is improving. My dd's spelling is still really bad, and she's 11, but has just achieved level 4 in all her SATS (teacher rushed out of a lesson yesterday to tell me, she was so delighted), managing level 4 in literacy by dint of her reading now being really good, to offset the poor writing.

I don't know if I'm being defeatist saying that to a certain extent they/you will have to learn to cope with the spelling; it doesn't matter how many times dd learns a word, when she writes it independently it's back to the same old spellings (with many an e added to the end).

I get a couple of meetings a year with the SENCO etc and am having one next week, so I think it is worth making yourself known (in a nice way) as a concerned parent.

thank you all very , very much it is very reassuring, and i think i am probably expecting too much, it is good to hear that DS is 'normal' within the context of dyslexia. that makes me feel much better ! much appreciated

Oooh, sorry to jump in on this thread, DS is almost the same age as yours, lulumama (8y3m) and I have requested a meeting with SENCO/class teacher after school today.

I feel I need clarification on exactly the help he is currently getting (DS on SA+), I know he has had extra help 4 mornings a week with phonics since Nov.

His IEP (April) set his targets to read and spell words containing letter strings 'str' 'scr'. I don't know if he has achieved this at all, he gets different spellings every week and I've not seen any containing those letter strings.

Have seen Paed. and her tests (Wechsler) last month had DS at age equiv. 6 for wording reading and 5 for pseudoword decoding (what is that??) .

I hope I am not being neurotic in going to see SENCO but I don't feel I get any feedback at all unless I request it.

oooh, you have reminded me to update this thread.

got DSs school report:

he got an A for his reading, in both teacher assessment, and SATS and effort , his progress has been 'phenomenal' !! so i feel much better . he got c for spelling though,but i was expecting that.

i feel more reassured and i am going to wait and see how he gets on the first part of yr 4 before i see SENCO again, his screenign tests also show an improvement. so all going in the right direction and i am being neurotic !

My DS got a lot of help in Yrs 4, 5. He had one to one with the TA doing a scheme called Wordwall, followed by Stareway to Spelling

In year 4 his teacher said she longed to give him a Level 4 for his writing because of the vocabulary etc but the spelling brought him down to a level 2.

He just scraped a 4c for writing in his Yr6 sats but a 5b for reading. He has just finished Year 7 and has been allowed to do most of his homework on PC, although he still makes a few spelling mistakes because he uses "correct words" ie are for our or howl for whole

He just had his end of Yr 7 exams and has progressed to a 5b for writing. His english teacher told him not to worry about his spelling and to concentrate on the style etc
