Help me include a blind student in Year 7

I will be teaching a blind student at secondary school from September. Although some training is provided it will surely not surprise anybody when I say that it is woefully inadequate.

If you have any experience with teaching blind students at secondary or have a blind dc in mainstream school I would appreciate any pointers!

At the moment I am most worried about the upcoming transition day. Which “getting to know each other” activities would you suggest for a form of 32, where one child is blind with no residual vision (and their TA)?

Please don’t flame me, I am all too aware of how underqualified I am for this job!

Check if the EHCP mentiones an external body such as CENMAC, they should visit the school and provide equipment. Look up RNIB, they offer books as pdf so that an iPad can read them out loud to the student. There should be a risk assessment in place to check if the site is suitable and then the LEA should send a mobility specialist to teach the child how to move around the school. PE department should come up with a plan of alternative activities. A simple transition plan should be put in place listing what issues may occur, what will the school do to put support in place and who is responsible for making sure it happens.
What is your role? Are you a TA, form tutor or a subject teacher?
