Draft EHCP plan in independent school

Hi, we are about to get draft EHCP plan and I hope they will find some hours of support. Let's say it's 12 hours. LA said that 12 hours equals to 2k in top up funding, which is not sufficient. The first SEN funding of 6k is a notional amount received by state schools but not by independent. I am trying to understand this: so only 2k will be provided although 8k I guess is actually needed to find these 12 hours. I thought that funding requested through EHCP is additional funding for therapies because whatever is in place is not enough (we pay the fees plus various privately funded support that on its own is already over 6k without SEN sessions provided in school).

Did anyone have experience with this? I understand hat you need to show that state money is well spent: it will cost the govnt more to find the child in the state school as they need to find the basic funding of 6-8k while we are paying for independent school ourselves saving them money.

Thanks!

If you’re staying at Indy school then expect to receive zero funding to provide the provision in the ehcp. Unless the private school is named in section I. Have you spoken to your Indy school, are they happy to be named?

I doubt you'll get a penny to be honest if it's a 'mainstream' Indy but you could try looking into the personal budget route? I don't know anything about it personally. My son has an Indy named on his EHCP so he is fully funded but the school's brief is "specialist support"

I am at this stage too, my child is in a small independent school, and I have just received the draft EHCP plan. The school Head says they already have other children at the school partly funded by the council. But none of the funding has been explained to me. I am interested in how this works too..

Unfortunately yes. If you require £8K funding then the EHCP will only provide 2K.

Hi Budur
Just wondering what was the outcome for you please? and if you don’t mind me asking what LA are you with please? As my LA are saying they can no longer provide funding for pupils in independent schools.
