Sending my child away - am I doing the right thing?

My son is 5 and has severe ASD, GDD, SPD and LD. I am a nervous wreck 24/7. For a long time there has been severe issues with his violence, he has the strength of a child twice his age and smashes the house up/attacks me and his sibling pretty much every second of every day. The neighbours hate us. I have no life, we can't go out because he screams and bites strangers. He does not even let me talk to my other child without attacking us, therefore doing things like homework, parties etc is impossible. My other child deserves a normal childhood. The doctor wont medicate him because of his age, and respite hasn't really helped. He smears faeces over the house and self harms and also doesn't sleep. I am a LP, and just can't cope anymore. He is never happy, apart from at school it seems! I have asked SS to place him into a residential SEN school to meet the needs that I can't, with the view of having regular contact/visits. They weren't happy about this because of his age, and said it would be setting him up for emotional problems, but I don't see how he could get any worse. I was asked to consider a foster family, but I am reluctant as going to residential would feel like I'm doing something positive for his education, whereas handing him over to a foster family feels like I'm giving up on him. I still want to maintain some parental responsibility and I still want to be able to have him to stay. I don't want him passed around if a family are unable to cope with his violence. Maybe even the option to have him living here again when he's older if he can get his violence under control. I feel pathetic for not being able to control such a young child, but believe me when I say he's very very strong and I believe if he carries on living here he could seriously harm one of us in a couple of years time. I wake up every morning feeling sick that I am going through with this, wonder if I am making a mistake, and then he will attack me like a vicious dog and I realise it's the right thing to do. AIBU? Any similar experiences would be really helpful too. He's just come from from school really happy and now it's made me question everything again
