What happens during the Paediatrician assessment?

We find out next week if my son will be asked to meet with the Paediatrician re. his assessment for I assume ASD. His file is going to be considered by the panel on Tuesday and we should find out by Thursday.

Assuming he does get asked to come in what happens exactly? Obviously I shall be there but do they ask me to be in the room with him or will I be sitting outside? Also what does the assessment entail? I'm assuming play based activities with questions, will they ask me things too?

It may be different but my son met with a multi disciplinary team, a paed, ed psyc , senco school nurse etc for a three hour meeting. They had previously collected other evidence. He was asked very general questions etc and we got a dx of HF ASD that afternoon. it was all very relaxed and anxious at the same time. I did feel a bit :( talking about my ds in an invasive manner in front of hm. He had to listen to all his autistic traits

Ds had a paed assessment age 6.8, as a result of which he was referred for ASD assessment (and rejected until referred again a year later...)

I sat in the room and answered questions, while another chap and a student chatted to ds (making notes on what he said), they asked him to draw some things, eventually persuaded him to draw what they asked for as well as what he wanted to do. Then they did lots of puzzles with him, checking his working memory, visual processing, etc - he loved all that.

I was asked about his medical history, family history, and all his quirks and when they started as well as normal aspects of his development, so having a few school and nursery reports to refer to was helpful - could confirm when he walked, talked, stopped eating, etc. When they did the ASD screen, he was mostly in a different room so didn't have to talk about him in front of him.

Thank you. DS is 4 so I know things would be different depending on ages, well I assume so anyway! The referral is primarily his lack of fine motor skills and speech and language so I'm sure they'll work out pretty quickly that giving him a pen and asking him to draw anything will result in not much at all 😬

Do you think it would be a good idea for my DP to come to? He thinks it's all nonsense so I'm a bit worried he might be less than helpful but equally I'm a bit emotional about a possible diagnosis so I'm worried I might cry ☹️
