Hi everyone. My son is 5 and has a diagnosis of dyspraxia and autism. He is currently in reception. His ehcp was drawn up last year and is due for review. He has done well with reading and numbers as he is good with concrete concepts but we have experienced a lot of disruption at home with his behaviour and sleeping pattern leading to me finishing work for the time being. He continues to struggle with spatial awareness and abstract concepts. He has sensory difficulties and is very emotional. He seems to now be saving his outbursts for home and we really struggle after school. I have looked through his review and feel that all of it is still relevant and this has been reflected in his daily diaries. My concern is that because he can read and is doing well with numbers is that school may not fully portray his needs at review and I feel that his needs are being looked at too basically. He is awaiting review from ot and salt school teams but this may take a long time. Please could people tell me their experiences of the annual review and how much input parents can have? Thanks

Parents play a huge part in the review.
Clearly, it can vary depending on individual personalities, but if you feel nervous or intimidated at meetings, then take an advocate with you - can be a friend or relative, someone like a Family Support Worker, or you can get in touch with SENDIASS for support in your local area.

The fact you have daily diaries is a help. The fact that things have got to the stage where you've had to give up work. The fact that the anxieties come out at home, rather than school, is not an uncommon thing.

It depends on what you want, do you think the school are stretching him above his limits which is leading to issues at home? Would you like him to be in a specialist setting? Or, the school to back off a bit during the day?
