Hi,I was wondering if anyone could help me understand what a speech sound disorder is,if it will go away ever, and what help the local authority can offer us.

My Ds 6 was diagnosed with significant speech sound disorder when he was 5 the info i have been told by an ed psych is that he has no delay and a wide range of vocab the problem is no one can understand him.

His mainstream ht got him a place half way through p1 at a speech and language unit which he attended 4 afternoons a week.

This unit is only funded for 5 and 6 yo,now ds is going into p3 he has lost his place and his speech although improved is still not good.

At a meeting called an integrated assessment meeting where me his mainstream teacher, ed psych, unit teacher, both ht,and salt person
attended it was decided he should go back to mainstream ft with salt team input.

The ht of mainstream school is not happy and is worried about funding as mainstream school get no extra funding for ds.
There is going to be a meeting on the 20 june at mainstream school to set up an IEP (individual education plan) and i dont know what to ask.

I get the feeling that mainstream HT sees us as a burden.

We are in Scotland.Tia

I don't think the HT sees him as a burden, all funding for SEN, special education needs, changed in April, well it did in the UK and schools are still getting to grips with it all.

The school should present you with a draft IEP, that you all go through, agree and sign and should get reviewed termly. It will set out targets and ideas and actions to assist you DS.

Can you afford to pay for speech therapy lessons yourself and take him out of school for these? I did this with DS now 11 who is dyslexic in years 4 & 5 (he got funding in Y6 for a tutor to some into school), school were happy for me to do this every monday at 10.30am for an hour, 2 hours in total with travelling time. School made sure he missed no lesson learning and he always caught up.

Also my DS was a very different child compared to Y3 and Y6, what I mean by that is that 3 years makes a huge difference, just with growing and maturity and how this affects his abilities.

Let us know how the meetimg goes.
