Hi my 5yr old DD has just been diagnosed with ASD. It is all just a bit overwhelming to me, and I was just wondering where do I go from here? I am looking for any support groups in my area that I could go to. I live in Eltham in SE London. I think school are pushing for a statement as she is really struggling in school. She cries every morning and says she doesn't want to go to school. She has a speech and language disorder so I think she is feeling really isolated at school. It just breaks my heart when she cries and I really dread school mornings. Has anyone else had this?

Thanks for reading

poor you, and poor her. no advice, sorry, just wanted you to know you're not alone in this. i'm sure someone helpful will come along. I think the school are doing the right thing in pushing for a statement as they'll be much better placed to give her the one to one help she needs then, but other than that not sure.

Hi sorry you're feeling so bad and your DD too. There does seem to be a lot of help available from the national autistic society. My DD was diagnosed with autism aged 5 also (she's now 9) and we went to the NAS one day help session and were then referred to the early bird course which is for about 10 weekly half day sessions including a teacher or TA from the school. There were about 6 families attending the sessions and so we were able to support each other. DD used to hate school but now most of the time thinks it's great so things can change with the right help and support. Not saying life's easy but it's better than it was. Good luck!
