Are there any books for children about Autism

Iwas hoping to find one because my DD who is 6 has a good friend at school with Autism...the little girl is very bright and plays well...she has other issues which affect her physically and my DD constantly asks questions...she loves her mate and I wondered if there were any fiction books about frendships like this? Or something she could relate to which might help her understand why her friends reacts in certain ways at times.

The little girls parents are rarely about at school and I don't feel comfortable asking them...

Ds had a lovely one he borrowed from the library but I can't for the life of me remember then name.

and fwiw, i never mind parents asking me how to explain dd2's condition to their kids (she has cp) - it's much much better to feel that people are including your child than creating an elephant in the corner...

'Can I tell you about asperger syndrome' is good for explaining AS to that age group.

I don't think most books are aimed at 6 year olds.


Can't tell you how lovely it is to hear about your DD and your encouragement in their friendship. Lots of ASD Mum's can feel very, very lonely and isolated because of other parents views. Be brave, approach the parents and see if their little girl wants to come to tea one day. Bet you will get a friend for life.

We read a fantastic book called DandyLion about a lion who is very different to all the other children. The message is a bit more subtle but I gave it to DS1 to read and I think it helped him understand DS2's differences, infact I think it helped him to see that everybody is different.
