Do you stop using carriers as soon as your child hits the weight limit for them? Or do you think they can take more weight the companies are just being extra cautious?

I never looked at weight limit tbh. Mine both went in up until 4 years occasionally. I would say they were between 15-18 kg at this time. The slings seemed fine and looked like new still when we have to a friend who still uses

Ah ok just looked, boba 4g says until 45lbs approx which is 20.4kg. That's the same weight as my 6 1/2 year old so I think you will be fine!

Te carrier I have is only until 12kg and DS is between 13&14 now. We need one for holiday in a few weeks so don't know if I should try to use the one we already have or buy one that will last til 20kg. But if we don't use it much it'll be wasted money.
Just wary of putting him on my back and it breaking and him falling backwards out of it. If he was at the front I'd like to think I'd manage to get him if anything happened. But he's too big to front carry now I think. Will be too difficult to walk.

I just wondered if they only test to what they say in the booklets but actually can take more weight, a bit like prams in the uk vs America - same pram but America they test til 25kg so can put it in their booklets.
However the carrier I would use is mothercare brand so I assume wouldn't be in America anyway.

Tbh I would be tempted to get another. You can get them secondhand now off eBay for example for about £30. I don't know how old your son is but we found ours very useful for older toddler.

0-2 years we used sling virtually every day so def important

But 2-4 years we also found it very useful even if not used daily. Things like going for a long walk somewhere at 3, we knew they could walk miles and would be ok there and most the way back but if they got tired it wa star easier throwing them in back carry last 20 mins than piggy back with my arms bent back. Same with late night/ early flights for example or holidays. At 3 they didn't need pram or sling most the day, but arriving at 11pm at gatwick it was super handy for the long walk to security with asleep child, or after late nights at restaurants in sunny climates.

Also if it's only to 11kg, my main thing would be it would be very uncomfortable for you to carry them as not ergonomic enough for a higher weight

Think I'll take a look on ebay, just not sure what to go for.
We found the one we have was uncomfortable quite soon into walks so really do need to get another I think.

You probably are looking for a toddler soft structure carrier.

Brands like boba 4g, Tula toddler, ergo, etc.
