Slimming World

Struggling after one week!

Dalesgirl16 · 13/06/2018 11:27

This is my second try at Slimmimg world - I lasted just a few weeks last time. I seem to find the programme difficult to follow in that I dont like eating this way. I know I have weight to lose but I find myself eating lots of fruit in between meals now and surely eating lots of fruit can't be healthy as it's sugary. I also struggle with the hexb as I like to eat nuts and seeds daily and if I have them I can't have any bread or they are high syn value. I also eat out a lot or have family dinners and that messes things up so I keep going over my syns. I will have lost two pounds this week by tomorrow's weigh in but it's been stressful and I don't like constantly thinking about what I can and can't eat. I can't lose weight through exercise as I'm recovering from a chronic foot problem. I should just give up on slimming world shouldn't I? My main motivation is just the weekly weigh in to hold me accountable.

You sound unmotivated and self- defeating.
You could consider giving up and maybe rejoining when you feel more positive about making changes.

Find a different approach - although I don't know many that allow you to eat lots between meals and have family dinners without impact.
Maybe the 5:2 would suit you better?

I'm very motivated to lose weight but find some things about SW quite hard. I think I do need to look at other approaches or just be a bit lax with it.

Could you try calorie counting instead? You can still have nuts and seeds, then make all meals 50% veg and still have your fruit snacks.

I'm afraid the reality is that eating out and family dinners are always difficult when you're trying to lose weight unless you're willing to order very plain healthy food. While I'm losing weight I try to make eating out the exception rather than the rule because the reality is that you can't expect to lose weight while eating big/unhealthy meals! Dieting isn't fun but if you want to be slim you've gotta make sacrifices!

Yes SW isn't for everyone. What about weight watchers if you feel you need the weekly weigh in, or just my fitness Pal with a weekly WI that you do yourself?( I would never do this do I do Slimming World Grin) It did take me a long time to get my head round it and actually look at it positively as I was always trying to find fault with it and concentrated on what I couldn't have rather than what I could. I hate counting and measuring and I prefer vegetables to fruit so it suits me. I also love cake but I know I will not be able to eat cake and lose weight.

Hoping to not have too many meals out any more. The family dinners will continue. I will see what my consultant can advise too. Thank you!

If you are eating fruit that's a speed food, then that will give you the filling power you need so you wouldn't be over consuming it anyway.

I would personally just syn your nuts and have your healthy extra B as normal. They can be high in syns but remember they're healthy and good fats, so I think it is worth spending majority of your syns on nuts as you enjoy them and it gives you more satisfaction than a chocolate bar and/or crisps would!

As for the eating out a lot and family meals, unfortunately you are just going to have to find a way around it if you are determined! If you are eating out, try opting for a baked jacket potato instead of chips, have steak but cut the fat off and count approximately 6 syns for minimal oil used! Chicken skewers are a good option too, again counting 6 syns for minimal oil.

Another option is you can just use your syns weekly instead! So if you go over one day, you will still have syns leftover before the week has finished. Some people do find they're more in control when they use their weekly syns.

I, personally, would not calorie count. I have tried it but felt extremely restricted, I became far too obsessed and even when I was at my recommended daily allowance, I was still hungry! You have to count calories for fruit and vegetables and lean cooked meats whereas with Slimming World, you don't.

Finally, you could try Keto, 5:2 or WeightWatchers. The bottom line is, if you desperately want to lose weight, you are going to have to sacrifice some meals when you go out or go to family members for dinner. It is hard, but how badly do you really want this? My husband and I used to go out 4 times a week, now we only go out once a fortnight and that's the time when I decide to treat myself.

Good luck with whatever you decide but remember: no amount of fattening or unhealthy food will make you feel good as being slim and healthy ever will!

Check out TeamRH on Facebook. It’s basically calorie counting but teaches you about nutrition and how to lose weight sustainably while eating normal food.

I’ve lost 26lbs so far which is about 1lb per week on average.

Thank you. I've apparently lost 5ilbs in my first week which I don't get as I don't feel it and had a few slips up for sure. I didn't get to speak to the consultant but will email her my concerns.

I usually lose about 4lb or 5 lb in my first week without too much effort... You wouldn't feel a difference yet. It tends to slow down after the first week. Well done!

Hello dales Week one for me too. Never done anything like this before. I too struggled yesterday when out for a meal. Ended up with noodles, prawns etc. No drink. No starters or pudding. Still it’s probably 150 syns so trying not to think about it. I’m thinking of the last week as an introduction/preparation week. I’ve batch cooked twice, downloaded the app, bought some better food scales, some other bits of kitchen stuff to help. I’m being weighed tomorrow. Will have to leave 15 mins before the end of the session to go to pilates. I’ve a very strong feeling I’ve lost bugger all. Aiming for a stone. What are you aiming for and over how long? I’m a bit on the dark with all this to be honest.

I don't really have a target weight and would like to just lose every week if possible. I can't see any weight shifting so far this week but I have eaten out for Fathers Day. Eating my daughters leftovers is my downfall!

Family dinners - you cook or eat out?

I haven’t really changed what I cook for the whole family but still stay on plan. I substitute homemade potato wedges for chips which no one objects to. I have more veg or salad with my meals.
My top tip is overnight oats. I have these for breakfast and they keep me going and on plan all day.

If you like Nuts and seeds more than fruit and eating out perhaps keto or low carb would suit you better. Nuts and seeds are good for occasional snacks and as long as you track your calories fats protein and carbohydrates using an app it's actually not difficult (or I wouldn't manage it!) I'm a vegetarian and thought it would be a lot hard harder. I've lost a stone since the middle of May with a couple of events where I didn't get healthy choices at the menu.

The thing is no weight loss programme will allow you to carry on eating and living as you have been while being successful.
Our bad habbits and life style choices are why we are all trying to loose wight. My habbit is the evening i am full but find myself picking or having a glass of wine because im bored lol.
Have you tried adapting your staple family meals so that your dd and dp are all mostly eating what you are.
When i did sw when married thats what i did. My husband and son didnt notice the difference and actually preferred the new recipies. It helped me make it a lifestyle change rather than a diet.
Im eating out thursday and have checked out the menu online finding subsitutes to swap with and make my meal sw free. Theres one part of my meal i dont want to miss out on so as i use flexi syns weekly i will syn that out of my weekly allowance.
I struggled with the small amount of bread and usually use them for lunch or breakfast as i eat both meals at my desk. but if i know i need my HEB for someyhing else that day (in your case nuts) then i find alternatives for lunch or breakfast. For example yesterday i knew i wanted burger and wedges for dinner while watching the footie so i took a boiled egg in (easy to eat at my desk) and then fruit and natural yoghurt for breakie and left overs from the day before (with extra salad) for my lunch.

Thanks. I left the group last week as I really don't enjoy talking to strangers about my weight irl. I have tonight joined online as I need the discipline of logging in my weight. I will do my best with it.

I hate to see people struggling with weight loss. I use resistance tech leggings that help me burn extra calories just by wearing them. Every step you take ads up at the end of the day. They are called Sweetflexx.
