The 1 syn per 20 calorie rule

I've heard if something isn't syn free it's 1 syn per 20 calories, but does this apply to everything?

For example, I've made a lasagne but I've used a jar of Asda white lasagne sauce. It has 99 calories per 1/4 jar. The lasagne serves 4 and all other ingredients are syn free.

Would it be 5 syns per portion? Or are some things higher in syns generally regardless of the calorie count?

Was it a 480g jar? If so it's 19.5 syns for the jar. That would possibly round up to 5 syns per portion.

OP, the 1 syn per 20 calories rule applies where there is no free food allowance in the item, as is probably the case with your white lasagne sauce.
If you were synning, say,a ready meal of chicken curry and rice, some of the ingredients would be free foods, so not all the calories in the meal would have a syn value.

So they say 1 syn per 20 cals, so why doesn't fruit have a syn value. A small tangerine from Sainsbury's is 45 cals....

Because fruit is a free food. Syns only apply to non free foods.
