Someone told me a recipe for SW onion bhajis that were syn free, I tried to make from memory yesterday - they were awful so I must have done something wrong or missed something out

Does anyone have a recipe I could try?

I don't have any SW recipes I'm afraid but I do have a recipe for baked bhajis from Meera Sodha Fresh India if that would be worth looking at?

Funnily enough I had just saved this recipe to try tomorrow:

SYN FREE OVEN BAKED ONION BHAJI
serves 4
Author:Slimming Eats

INGREDIENTS

500g (17.5oz) of onion, halved and sliced (I use a mixture of white and red onions)
pinch of garlic powder
pinch of ginger
pinch of turmeric
â…” cup (160ml) of canned chickpeas, drained
1 cup (240ml) of sweet, potato ,grated
salt to season
2 tsp of ajwain seeds (if you can't get these use cumin seeds)
1 egg
chilli powder to taste, if you like a bit of heat (optional)
handful of coriander, chopped (optional
spray oil
½ cup of yogurt
bunch of fresh mint, finely chopped
juice of half a lemon
pinch of salt
1 tsp of maple syrup (1 syn) or you can use sweetener to keep completely syn free
If you can get it I also like to add a little bit of MDH Chutney Podina Masala, which adds great authentic flavour to the mint yoghurt

METHOD

  1. Spray a frying pan over a medium heat with spray oil. Add onion and season well with salt.
  2. Fry until lightly golden (this will take about 20 mins, don't be tempted to turn heat up, or you will burn onions)
  3. Add the ajwain seeds (or cumin seeds) garlic, ginger and turmeric and fry for another minute
  4. Remove from heat and set aside to cool
  5. Preheat oven to 200c or 400f (gas mark 4)
  6. Add the chickpeas to a mini food processor with the egg and pulse till smooth.
  7. Add this to a bowl with the grated sweet potato, onion mixture and optional chilli powder and coriander if using
  8. Mix to combine
  9. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and form the mixture into equal sized balls. Place on the tray and spray over the top with top with spray oil and bake in the oven for 30 mins, till golden.

10. Mix together the yogurt, mint, lemon juice, pinch of salt and maple syrup (or sweetener) plus Chutney Podina Masala if using and serve this on the side.

basin it really wasn't! Basically fry-light the onions, grate the sweet potato (15 seconds in the food processor), blitz chickpeas in same food processor and mix everything else in, make into balls and bake!

I always find that written recipes make everything seem more complicated than they really are!

Very nice they were too! And syn free - bonus!

Will have to look at the Nom ones too though.

Just looked at the nom one - it's actually very similar except the chick peas and the one I did fried the onion first.

Microwave in a bowl for 4 minutes until soft then add 1 egg. Good mix and place blobs on a baking sheet and cook x

I tried the Pinch of Nom ones with grated sweet potato but they were a bit eggy! Next time will try the chickpea method as that's closer to the genuine thing

I did the pinch of nom pakoras which were good.

Well done for getting back on plan basin. Good luck with the WI and the week ahead. Hope the onion bhajis work for you.

Completely missing the point, but given that traditionally bhajis are made with gram flour, and these recipes seem to be bending over backwards to substitute it, how is that different to putting in mashed up chickpeas, nutritionally? Couldn't you just bake a standard recipe???

Probably Grubby. I've given up now trying to understand it and have surrendered completely to the SW mantra.

I sometimes feel like I'm in a cult!
