weight going up not down

I have been doing Slimming World for 2 days now and seemed to have put on 3lbs.

I am really struggling to eat the food

I find with diets I can stick to them no problem but what usually happens is I lose a couple of pounds the first week, stay the same the 2nd then put on the 2lbs I lost the 1st week and start putting weight on the 4th week.

With slimming world I feel bloated and the scales appear to be going in the wrong direction. It is definitely more food and carbs than i am used to.

FWIW I am vegetarian. I don't like cakes or sweet things in general. The only things I have sweet is sorbet if I go out to eat (about once per month) and once in a blue moon I will eat chocolate. I eat loads of veg and maybe one piece of fruit per day. I try to eat very healthily as I like that sort of food but the weight piles on.

Usually I would eat Quorn fillets cooked in a jar of Italian tomato sauce (apparently about 5 syns for 1/2 jar) but the ready meal sweet potato curry is no syns but is huge and leaves me feeling bloated.

Am I doing something wrong.

Yesterday I had

Small wholemeal role with Quorn burger

I shared with ds we mixed the Iceland free food Byriani rice with a tin of beans.
Ds had more than I did.

Slimming world ready meal Sweet potato curry with broccolli and carrots

I had 3 teas through out the day with a sugar in each.

I had the apple and orange and the slimming world chilli with 3 tblspoons of rice and broccolli carrots peas and cauliflower and my 3 teas the previous day

Am I doing something wrong.

Friend swears by it but I remain to be convinced

I am very over weight BMI well into the 30s

Better help will be along soon, I'm sure, but my initial question is why are you eating more than you normally do?

And why are you weighing yourself after just a couple of days?

I'm a similar BMI to you and I'm losing using My Fitness Pal and addressing my carb loading. It's small but consistent losses I'm seeing.

BastardGoDarkly Wed 15-Feb-17 10:29:36

You don't have to overeat?

And come on, its 2 days!?

neonrainbow Wed 15-Feb-17 10:32:44

You're obviously eating too much. Slimming world does not encourage small portions so you need to focus on not eating when you're not hungry and stopping when you're full.

Are you going to a group?

Only weigh yourself once a week - at the same time, on the same scales (Groups scales if you attend)

You need to add speed food to the Iceland meals - they aren't "enough" on their own. So instead of adding baked beans to biryani - add something like, spinach, veggies, salad etc

Make sure you are putting enough speed on your plates too - a third should be speed smile

Don't rely on the frozen ready meals - cook your own meals too smile

What I usually eat is more syns than what slimming world say I should eat.

What happens is I get hungry in the evening and instead of a Quorn product in tomato sauce (basis for curries chillis Bolognese etc) I have chosen the ready meal with no syns which leaves me bloated with serious wind issues.

I got on the scales this morning as my stomach is so distended and I felt fatter and more uncomfortable than I have ever felt. This was 14 hours after I had last eaten.

2 days in? Don't be silly!
Ready meals are full of salt so you're probably retaining loads of water if that's what you're eating.
Focus on fresh food and keep the plate balanced with vegetables and you should start losing. Lots of water. And don't eat when you're not hungry!

Oliversmumsarmy Wed 15-Feb-17 10:53:12

I am a seriously bad cook. (dp makes his own dinner and dc now they are old enough make their own too.)

I eat loads of veg. I Iove my veg. I can just about boil veg and potatoes and stick Quorn products in the oven with a jar of tomato sauce. After that it all goes down hill.

I do only eat when i am hungry and i get full very quickly.

I have been through the a and b lists and struggled to find things i actually eat. Soya milk and bread seemed to be the only 2 things i could find. I don't eat cheese.

Has anyone else had the bloating and wind and how long did it take to settle down

If tomato sauce suits you then you can use your syns for it, that's what they're there for

Or it's really easy to make your own (tinned tomatoes, passata, onion, garlic, mixed herbs, added peppers & carrots for a speed boost just soften the onion and garlic in fry light then add everything else and heat through)

If you don't like eating carbs, you can do the SP days, with eggs, quorn mince or pieces, beans, lentils etc for the protein

LostMyDotBrain Wed 15-Feb-17 11:06:14

Please forgive me if I phrase this badly, I assure you I mean no offence at all.

But I really think it's important in weight loss to acknowledge where you 'go wrong' in the first place. All being well internally, I'd question how your BMI is so high if you're stopping eating when you're full (which you say happens quickly), eat quorn products with veg, minimal sugars by way of fruit and rarely have sweet things.

Which of your eating habits have lead to your BMI being quite so high? (again, no offence meant...mine is high too!)

Candypops14 Wed 15-Feb-17 11:11:25

Instead of using the jarred tomato sauce, get some passata, chopped tomato, tomato purée which are free/speed food, I always add onion, garlic and ginger and any other veg I fancy. Really easy to do! Stick with it for a few weeks I'm sure you will get results! Also online there's loads of simple slimming world recipes which are really good

DanielCraigsUnderpants Wed 15-Feb-17 11:38:40

Are you drinking enough water / non caffeinated drinks? If you are only drinking three cups of tea a day you will be very dehydrated and will be retaining water. 2 days in is nothing however, and your weight will go up and down by a few pounds each day let alone over two. Weigh in at the same time each week.

I dont also see that many carbs in your menu there. Half of some rice and a wholemeal roll is not a lot unless I've misread it. What protein can you add as that is more filling.

00100001 Wed 15-Feb-17 11:55:00

Go through the book and highlight everything you like/will eat.

YOu will defintely be able to find easy recipes.

Saying "I'm a bad cook" isa really bad excuse. If you can use a knife, a spoon and can follow instructions you can cook smile

00100001 Wed 15-Feb-17 11:55:17

So for example - making a soup is really easy.

neonrainbow Wed 15-Feb-17 11:55:31

I don't think you're being honest with yourself about your eating habits. You also need to make sure you're exercising. Stop telling yourself you're a bad cook and learn. Get some slimming world recipe books and learn to follow a recipe, the slimming world ones are extremely simple to follow and most are quick to make. Things like spag bol, chilli, casseroles, curries, even roast dinners and fry ups can be done free on slimming world. Ready meals are full of sugar and salt, and ultimately are not a healthy or sustainable lifestyle change. If you haven't got one, a slow cooker is very good because you can load it up with veg and stock and some herbs/spices and whatever else you fancy and its basically free.

If you really want this to work youre going to have to figure out how to cook simple healthy meals, work out portion control and stop weighing yourself more than once a week! Your weight can fluctuate on a daily basis and you're looking for an overall loss. Even better to not think about weight and instead think about health.

Sorry - keep posting by accident blush

Veggie Soup - for example
peel and cut up an onion (if that is too difficult, but prechopped frozen)
cut up a carrot
cut up a pepper
cut up some celery into chunks
opena tin of tomatoes
Put a stock cube in a mug, cover in boiling water
get salt and pepper out

then fry the onion for 5 mins until soft
add all other ingredient into the pan
bring to boil
simmer for 15 mins or so - storiing occasionally
add salt and pepper to taste

00100001 Wed 15-Feb-17 11:59:35

start with simple recipes - don't go for a three course meals for 6! smile

ConfusedCod Wed 15-Feb-17 12:05:33

I had this with slimming world.

When they say 'eat as much pasta etc.' as you like until you feel full, I don't think they take in to account people like me.

I have no 'off switch' and easily over ate pasta and potatoes. blush

I joined ww and it's working out much better for me as you have to have correct portion sizes (so easy with the app)

Lost ten pounds this first week grin

Groovee Wed 15-Feb-17 12:35:08

I am not a great cook but I have been trying recipes.

Pinch of Nom have a 2 week vegetarian plan. Maybe follow that.

Don't keep weighing yourself. You are best weighing once a week. You get a more accurate picture.

Make sure you have your 1/3 speed. I don't use the ready meals but my consultant recommended only having half and having speed on top.

Oliversmumsarmy Wed 15-Feb-17 12:48:11

The thing is I only would eat potatoes and rice. Most of the time I eat neither.

I used to go to the gym everyday pre kids. I did a 7 miles bike ride 120 floors on the stairmaster and a 2 miles run. Just over the hour to do everything watched everything I ate.

I was still fat. 10stone 7lbs. I am quite short. However I did have the heart rate apparently of an Olympic athlete.
The only time I lost weight was when I had morning sickness (threw up everything for 5 months and lost over 2 stone)
Then piled it back on in the last 4 months ending up at nearly 15stone.
Lost the lot within a week of giving birth so went back to 10stone 7lbs. Put on 6stone with next pregnancy and lost 3stone 7lbs then put on 2 stone over the last year (think menopause)

I am constantly with people so they know what I eat.

When I have been away on holiday people actually comment about how little I eat.

It is embarrassing as I can see people looking at what I have on my plate and expecting it to be filled with chips and instead I have a plate full of lettuce leaves

I don't go to the gym anymore as I don't have the time. I work from home. I homeschool one child and am carer to my dp who is terminally ill

My friend swears by SW and has lost nearly 2stone in 2 months..

Today I have had some melon cubes came in a pot from Sainsburys and I am full. Haven't even had a cup of tea

You probably don't eat enough.

00100001 Wed 15-Feb-17 14:28:37

Slimming World don't say "eat as much rice/pasta/potatoes as you like" - they say, eat as much as you like, WHILST food optimising. So, you should aim to eat (for example) 1/3 speed, 1/3 protein/dairy, and then 1/3 carbohydrates.

That isn't the same as "unlimited pasta" you won't lose weight if you eat (let's say) 250g of pasta, with 10g Cheddar and 40g tomato sauce (300g food total) because the proportions aren't right. You would need to have something like: 100g pasta, 100g veggies, 30g cheese, and 70g chicken.

Underthemoonlight Wed 15-Feb-17 14:38:55

Are you counting your syns this is really important to check everything you use even something like flour. Your allowed 5-15 syns a day so if your having three cups of tea with sugar say one spoon its 1 syn so that's 3 syns per day on your drinks alone. I'm not sure on the syn value of quorn but I know certain meats e.g sausages you have to syn so don't forget to check. Also measure your milk and food you used so your not going over your syns.

If you eat fish then there's plenty of easy meals salmon with vegetables or salad , fish stir fry, tuna canned but only in spring water you can have that with jacket potato.
