Slimming World

How many Syns?

Morning all.

Today I am starting following slimming world. I have the books and a recipe book, but am not going to the groups.

In the books it says that your group leader will help you work out how many Syns to have each day, and that it will be between 5 and 15.

Is there an equation to help work out how many you should have? I am 12st 1lb and want to get down to 10st 10lb. I'm 5ft 9ins tall if that relevant.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I used Slimming World for years - both at class and on my own. Currently doing nothing! However, in my experience nearly everyone I know has had about 10 syns to use everyday. I'm sure if you were hugely obese you could go up to 15 but 10 is fine for most.

I used to have days when I used hardly any. Others I went over. I may be way out of date but I'm sure 10 is the way to go.

I'm an online member and it just says 5-15 on there. I haven't been told a specific amount. My number of syns tends to vary on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes I eat the 15, and sometimes I only have 5. I made the mistake of not having the 5 syns when I first started, and found I lost more when I actually ate them!

It's not a sliding scale...the basic allowance is between 5 and 15, it's only if you're in one of the categories that qualify for extra that it would be different.

It's absolutely fine to use all 15, but equally you don't have to if you're not finishing them all.

So if I work on the basis that I can have 70 a week that should be ok??

And just try and spread them throughout the week, but don't worry if they aren't too evenly spread?

It's 105 over the week, though to start with while you're new to it I wouldn't try and spread them over the week as that doesn't work for everyone.

The reason it's between 5 and 15 is because if you give people 15, some people get stressed if they're not using all 15 and if people aren't even using 5 they're being way too strict about what they eat and ultimately won't be able to keep it up.

So you use what suits you between 5 and 15...if it was more than that, that's where the consultant would give you a different number, it's never less than that though.

I started a new group on Monday so we all had the new members talk. She just seemed to tell us all the reccomended amount was between 5 & 15. So this is what I've been going by..

Can you save them up and use them all over a weekend?

I've been given 12 but I think many new starters did. I've only been doing it 3 days and I used 7, 9.5 and 8 today.

giraffe, I'd double check exactly what your consultant meant...as no-one should ever be given anything less than the basic allowance of 5-15.

Choco, some people do that and lose successfully, for others it doesn't work...it's not how they're designed to work, they're supposed to be used daily, but you're free to try it and see whether it works for you.
