Can I buy sw books/plan online?

I want to try SW but for various reasons the classes aren't practical and I've looked at the online version but it has lots of features I don't want (online support, logging etc) and costs at least £60.

Can I buy the plan online? I see there are books on eBay but I'm not sure what I need - would a starter pack cover it? Or the lists of foods with their points/syns (sorry, not sure how it works!).

I think if I was in your position I would go to the class to get the books and have it all explained to you, which I think is quite important, and then just do it at home.

Do you get the books at a class then? I didn't realise that. Is that the starter pack?

Yes you get given a starter pack. You can also buy the recipe books there and they are cheaper than on Amazon.

Oh, ok. Perhaps that might be best.

Do have to get weighed/speak at meetings?

You get weighed at the meeting but only the person weighing you sees. The leader goes around the class and talks about everyones losses/gains but you don't have to speak if you don't want to. You don't even have to stay at the meetings, you can just weigh and go if you want to.

I would see if you can get a voucher for fee membership in a magazine and just go to 1 or 2 meetings, this way you have the plan explained to you and get the starter pack.
The reason I say to go to a couple of meetings is because I know in my group any recipe books you have to order and collect the following week.
I have joined various face book pages to do with slimming world that have helped me more than going to the group, and given me recipe ideas.
I have lost my first stone after 8 weeks and have now decided to not go back to the local group but use face book and this page for support.
I got most of the recipe books from group so I am good to go.

Thank you. That does sound like a good idea.

Is there generally a range of weights at a meeting? I am overweight, but not by much, and when I mentioned going along to a meeting to someone who I know goes, she got a bit sniffy with me and told me I didn't need to.

There is at ours. Some have lots to lose, some a little and quite a few are at target so are just maintaining. I had a stone to lose when I started.

There will be a huge range of shapes and sizes at the meetings. Some will be at the start of their weight loss journey, some near their goals, some maintaining etc. also some people have a lot of weight to lose and others not so much. I had 2 1/2 stone to lose and at 5'9" carried in quite well so a few people said i didn't need to go. But i did and i felt great when i shed that weight. One year and one stone back on later I am back losing. It's back n forth a bit!
