Can anyone provide me with a decent recipe that isn't so garlicky that we all end up stinking?

If you make your own you can leave the garlic out if you want (though it won't taste as good). The other thing you can do to temper the taste is to either roast the clove of garlic beforehand or microwave it for ~10 secs.

Apart from that, can of chickpeas, juice of a lemon or two - and grated rind if you like it lemony - teaspoonful (or more) tahini, and as much or little olive oil as you like (given topic you could try it without) - blend to desired consistency.
