Pillow for day-time naps for 7mo DS?

DS is 7.5 months, and sleeps fine on his back in his gro-bag at night. However, we had to resort to sleeping on his tummy for day-time naps (and achieved instant success when we tried it having battled for weeks to persuade him to sleep in the day!). He sleeps for a good couple of hours at a time this way but he spends the first few minutes in the cot head-banging, and 'constructing his bed' by dragging his blanket and teddy bear under his head. Not too sure if this is a comforter-type action (the blanket is usually quite soggy on the corners), or whether he would prefer a pillow. All the guidance states no pillows til they're one, but he's sort of making his own

Anyone else resorted to pillows at this age?

I know there is a fair chance I may be ripped apart for this reply, but I gave my DD a pillow from about six months. She had a really bad cold and it seemed to help her breath easier. Then she would not sleep without one and it just stuck. It is not recommended, of course, but if he is making his own in might be safer to just give him one. There is always the risk he might pull his blanket over his head by accident, and I'm sure a pillow is more difficult to suffocate on than a teddy bear...

Many thanks for that Plummed. The blanket is quite a holey one, so I'm not worried about him pulling that over his head, but think he may be much more comfy with a pillow, and it is reassuring to know that there is someone out there using it

Thanks for risking the outcry

DS has used one of these since he was 4 months old and he loves it (now 17 mo) - it is definitely his comforter as he never got attached to a dummy or teddy.

OP, I bought DS2 (now 6 m) a little memory foam pillow from jojomamanbebe - it's a 'from birth' one, and designed to help prevent flathead (which was why we bought it though this was probably us falling prey to a marketing gimmick ). But DS2 has totally adopted it as a comforter and loves to nuzzle against it at sleep times, and sleeps on it like a dream.

Might be worth trying one for your DS - they are pricey (£19) - but then again it would give a bit more peace of mind than a proper pillow as these are OK to use from birth...

Chocorange and amberflower, many thanks for your suggestions. I think I am going to invest in a pillow...just a little concerned as he does nap face down, but the teddy/blanket construction is getting more complex and higher daily!

Cheers
