And if so which one is good? Are they universal (ie fit any bed?)

we used a wooden one from mothercare, because we already had it from using it on ds1's bed

not all are universal though, if you have a divan you'll be fine with pretty much any, but if you have a bed with a frame some aren't suitanle

My parents have one on their spare bedroom bed which is like the bed in the film 'bedknobs and broomsticks' It is the pink one from the Great little trading company catalogue.
It works fine for when we want to cosleep with DD who doesn't like to stay in her toddler bed!!

yes we did, like these - the 'fitting any bed' problem is because they have two metal bars that go underneath the mattress.
If you have a divan obv both bars will rest on the flat base, but if you have slats you can't be sure that one won;t end up in a gap between slats and leave the guard wonky, iyswim.
We just struck it lucky and each bar ended up on a slat, but I would have taken it back to Motehrcare if it hadn;t fit.

We have the Lindam one too and it fits our iron bedstead very well. I imagine it would be hit and miss though.

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and someone recommended these. I bought them and they arrived really quickly and I am so glad I bought them - they are easy, reasonably priced and you can easily take them away with you.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that, I've gone for the Lindam one as I think it's probably most likely to fit our bed. We don't have a slatted base so hopefully that means it'll work. It also looks a little softer if dd rolls against it, the wooden ones look a bit more suited to toddlers rather than younger babies.
