Sleep

Up since 3.30am with Teething DS - what happens now?

My 5 month old DS is teething and was awake from 3.30am to 6.50am this morning despite calpol, breastfeeding etc. Once the Calpol kicked in he wasn't distressed, just not sleepy - arrrgh.

Just don't know what to expect today - he normally only naps for 30 minutes 3 times per day - but don't think that will work. Any suggestions how to manage today without completely wrecking bedtime timing tonight?

I would try and get him to have a good sleep this morning to catch up, better for him to have a long sleep this morning.

Poor you though, can you sleep when he does?

I suggest you both go back to bed for a snuggle and sleep if you can.

I am up with 4 year old dd at the moment and DS has been asleep in his swing since 6.50am. DH will take over when he gets up, but he was DJing last night and didn't get in till gone 2am so letting him have a bit of a lie in before the fun commences .

DD was such an angel with her teething this is a bit of a shocker!

I think I'm in the same boat, onehitwonder, we've been up through the night with DS (4.5 months) really unsettled, finally gave calpol around 4.30 and 'got up' (read: gave up putting him to sleep) around 6? suspect early teething pain ?

He also sleeps 3 x 30-45 mins in the day. We're going to try and get him to extend one of his naps, this morning we're going to take him out for a walk in the pram halfway through his first nap (he normally nods off in the pram so this should extend it)

We'll also do some hardcore rocking and cajoling at his afternoon nap, to see if he'll go down longer. Its usually around 4 or 5pm -- if we can't extend it he may go down 'for the night' (er, 2 or 3 hours) far too early!!

Good luck

Good luck to you too . Well he had a 1 hour sleep in his swing. Has been awake for an hour and just gone into melt down (no surprise really). DH and I are trying to rock him to sleep now. DD is parked in front of Beebies .
The calpol seemed to just calm him and give him more energy last night (it wasn't the sugar free version). Might try ibuprofen tonight if he is still struggling.

We got an hour from 8.30 to 9.30, must have been really tired hope yours got a good nap too! (sometimes a meltdown means a good nap is on the way? )

Well so far today he has slept altogether for 2.5 hours so far, which is at least an hour more than usual and DH is just taking him out for a final walk and hopefully nap!

Fingers crossed for a better night, I am going to try ibuprofen tonight - some teething advice sites say it works better than calpol.

Let us know how tonight goes for you Zozo

hi onehitwonder how was your night? ours was a lot better than in the last few days, he was a bit grumpy but had a couple of 2-hour stretches which was fab. i'm almost certain that teething is keeping him awake rather than a cold...

hope the ibuprofen did the job for you! will have to invest in some myself

Last night was a bit better for us too thanks, although I still only got about 5 hours sleep in 2 chunks, so not feeling too hot.
We are trying Ashton & Parsons and Bonjela in the daytime, Calpol at bedtime and Ibuprofen if need when he first wakes for a feed in the night. Hoping that if we can keep him pain free then his sleep will be better.

detinox is much better than bonjela for teeth. i found when DS was young and found teething terribly painful that an ibuprofen worked well to get a good long sleep session in. I gave it to hime about 30mins before bed to let it have time to work before he tried to go to sleep. as soon as he stirred in the night i would rub some detinox on and see if that got him back to sleep.

i also found letting him have an ice cold bottle in the night helped loads as well, but then my DS is strange in that he has always liked drinks very cold ( i think it was the months/year of hard teething that brought this on)
