Sleep

Nearly 6 month old very wet n waking up lots...its a bit long!

So, the boy is nearly months old and goes to bed really nicely and is sharing a room with his 3 year old sister. He is breastfed and sometimes takes some formula from daddy, depending on his mood (the boys' not daddys')
So, he wakes up really wet through, through nappy, vest, sleepsuit and sleeping bag, grr! So he has to be changed, then fed and put back down, he doesn't settle back down very well, screams the house down then has to be taken out of the bedroom as he wakes up his sister! Constant waking/feeding through the night ensures more wet beds n clothes and more changes and then he is basically in bed with me and DH is in the spare room. I have no idea why he is so unsettled, have been weaning since 5 months and he eats well.
Bsically, I would like advice on most absorbent night nappy, have been using eco-disposables, Nature Baby, Sainsbury's and aso Asda, they all leak, also tried a Pampers Baby Dry...also leaked. Also would like advice on how to get him to stop waking so much, not sure I want to do CC, but would like to spend a night with my DH in our bed ALONE! Sos its so long!

I've had this problem with disposables at night on ds1 and ds2, changing the baby in the middle of the night is just awful...My tip however is to use a bigger nappy than perhaps you think he should be wearing based on his weight, just go up one size .

Ha ha, in a moment of caffine-fuelled clarity...I wondered this myself, so have bought Hussies size 4, baby boy is usually a 3, I think...he is currently asleep as had busy day! Hoping it continues. Thanks Frog

Ho ho ho, of course I mean Huggies size 4s, not Hussies...wine fuelled typo!

Have found Huggies superdry the best for overnight use on DS2 (and even then they do occasionally give up under the onslaught of his wee). Nature nappies are useless as they disintegrate in the night - fine by day though. However huggies design seems to have changed in past few months and a couple of them have disintegrated on us in the past couple of months so may well be on the search again for a nappy that can cope will 12 hours of wees..

Use a slightly bigger nappy than you do in the daytime and very important do make sure his willy is pointing downwards when you put the nappy on. Otherwise he will wee straight upwards and over the waist band. DS1 did that until we figured out what was going on.

You can try pull-ups. My DS leaks only because he drinks a lot of bath water and then a big bottle of milk before he goes to bed. I find that pull-ups are the only things he doesn't leak through... Good luck!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghh! Huggies worked a few nites, then last night, nappy leaked, totally wet boy...washing machine broken down as well...happy days! That said, he didn't wake up too much when I changed him, then fed n put back in sisters room, phew! So glad for the sun and a bath for washing out sleeping bags n sleepsuits!
THanks for advice.

Although I'm wanting to be the voice of gloom here, your OP leaves me with a couple of questions that could merit a trip to the GP.

  1. Does he eat lots and drink lots during the day too? IE I mean more than your DD did at this age?
  2. Does he wee alot during the day too?
  3. Does he take long naps in the day but still is tired at bedtime?

I'm obsessed because of my own condition, but constantly leaking nappies and a yes to any of the above questions would have me asking the GP if it was worth checking him for diabetes or a kidney problem.

As I said, I have diabetes and this clouds my judgement somewhat. I'm certainly not trying to worry you. But I would recommend you observe how he is during the day too. And if it is just a night thing, ignore me.

Thanks Caitainahatita, not something I had thought of...
He seems to eat and drink normally through the day, he's breastfed by day and sometimes has some formula for evening feed, but slept thru it last night! He wees ok during the day, but has not weed thru nappies, clothes etc and he does nap well...having one now 2 big ones then goes to bed well in the evening.
I had him weighed yday, 16lb 9oz and the healt visitor suggested alt nappies (she said Huggis always leak) and put 2 on him!!! I did that last night, and he woke up only once but was damp this am, so maybe positioning of the nappy and willy moving around when he's moving in his sleep? I dunno really.
WIll monitor and poss take to GP.
Thanks for your suggestion!

Use the bigger nappy and a reuseable waterproof wrap over it with an absorbant dish cloth inbetween huggie and wrap.

Also fold the waistband over so it is inside at the top to discourage top leakage, make sure it is quite tightly fixed.

Is it being squashed by vest/sleepsuit?

Try adding a AF towel or panty liner inside to boost absorbancy.

Another small leak last night, thanks for suggestion Monstrous, will try wrap and booster between the disposable one.

Its a bit weird really, it seems to leak over the top right or left, never down. His willy always seems to be down, and this morning there was a weird wet patch on his left side, above the nappy...oh I don't blinkin' well know...the hunt goes on!

BTW, whats AF towel? Am I being thick...entirely possible...

Boots sell booster pads for re-useable nappies, but I found they work just as well in disposables - basically just a big sanitary towel, but it does boost absorbancy

I used to do 4 changes overnight with DS. You get really good at doing night changes without waking up properly. DS was co-sleeping, though. OTOH he's only 2.8 and dry at night now.

My DS was the same for ages. I used bigger sized disposables with a waterproof wrap(motherease)over the top from his daytime washables.

Eventually he stopped needing the wrap....another phase!
