My dd is still getting up at 5am and it's driving me mad. Ds is 3 weeks old and feeding loads at night so I'm exhausted.

I tried going in at 3.30 and disturbing her sleep pattern but it didn't make any difference. Later bedtime means she's just more tired.

Anyone got any ideas?

No ideas sorry - same boat here and lots of horrid emotions this morning - 3.50am yesterday - was found pushing buggy in despair at 5am around town - and 4.30am this morning - sick of it. Just sympathy to you both and to myself....

I'm sure you just want sympathy, not advice or suggestions....BUT.... I often found with mine that trying an 'earlier' bedtime helped them to sleep longer in the mornings. It works!

Sympathy too

Maybe we should all just get up together and expect everyone else to get up too Actually it looks like I'm lucky to get to 5am compared to some of you.

While sympathy is nice, it doesn't get me anymore sleep. She goes to bed at 7pm on the dot, do you think I should try a 6.30pm bedtime? Or is that too early? Even if she slept till 6.30am I'd be happy.

All of mine did have a 6.30 bedtime actually. It raises eyebrows from people who will tell you it is far too early but it worked for my dc. It may be just for a short period of time that you have an 'extra early' bedtime.
Hope you find something that works.

Right.

I'm going to try 6.30pm bedtime. If it helps her sleep longer and me get an extra half hour adult time, I may collapse with over sleep and shock

Confuzzled - am going to do 6.30 bedtime too - ds has only had 45 mins sleep since 4.30am this morning and is already going a bit potty as am I. Lets check in tomorrow morning and for the next few and see how we get on with earlier bedtime - am going round the twist with all of this - very early to bed tonight for me too!

Okay Broms, we can prop each other up

My dd doesn't nap during the day at all anymore so she's always exhausted by bedtime.

How old is your ds?

We'll see who's on here first tomorrow morning (well unless my dh decides to give me a sleep in even though it's his turn).

Good Luck.

Good plan.

DS is 21 months - yours? Congrats on ds - bet you are exhausted though.

Unfortunately my dh leaves at 5.15am every day for work so I am always on duty......

Fingers crossed tonight for you too - off to get the bath started!

Ahhh, we were late. Dd actually went to sleep at 6.50pm. Usually it's about 7.10pm but we rushed it tonight and dd was totally suss that I was in a hurry. Boo, will give myself more time tomorrow.

Dd is 2.6yo.

Hope your dh doesn't disturb your ds in the morning, otherwise he might sleep till 7am

my DD used to do this from 6-9 months,,,waking up at 4.50am,,,I put her to bed later and later and it worked...she now wakes up at 7.30am or even 8am and she goes to bed at 7.30-8.30pm. She is now 2.5years old.

No luck whatsoever - up at 3.40am - tried to get him to lie down again in cot to no avail - then tried co-sleeping - didn't work - gave up the ghost at 4.50am.

Oh dear, we're a bit better but I cheated and drugged dd with calpol at 4am because she had a blocked nose and felt really hot. She finally got up at 6am but calpol usually knocks her out anyway.

I'll try again tonight.

Hope you get a sleep today and your not too exhausted.

Confuzzled and Broms, try again tonight and I will too. I feel your pain. It is hell.

I've been sleeping on the sofa anytime from midnight for the last week with dd2 and she's up for the day between 4 and 5.

I'm escaping for a weekend away this weekend. Two nights away. It's all that's keeping me going!

I want to get it sorted before then as I fear dh won't hear her and although that might help, I can't bear the thought of it.

9 hours seems to be the max this little one will ever sleep (thats a great night with no interruptions which is rare) - but when you write it down like that it doesn't sound so bad - 9 whole hours - but it is just such a long day with him and everywhere it says that most toddlers need at least 11 hours at night. Am going to see the doc just to check they don't think he is missing out on sleep. Bit nervous trying earlier bedtime again as don't want 3.40am start again but when they have started that early they are so ready for bed by 7pm anyway so am going to do it this week and see what happens - to be honest it can't get worse.

Weekend away sounds great idea mad not mad!

Confuzzeled - should have done calpol like you at 3.40am as soon as he woke as he was quite bunged up. May well give that a go tomorrow morning.

I had a weekend away when dd was 14 months old, it was a hen I couldn't get out of. It was so good but I found I still woke up early.

Madnotmad - how old is your dd2?

My dd seems to be no more than 10 hours sleep in a whole day, no nap at all. I think that some kids don't need a huge amount of sleep, I've tried so many things and dd still doesn't sleep as much as everyone says she needs to.

Good luck at the doctor Broms.

I'm off to do some retail therapy.

She's 18 months Confuzzled.
I'm convinced with her it's an attachment thing. She's fine going to bed but when she wakes up she just wants me. I've made it worse by giving in to her just to keep her quiet and to stop her waking dh and dd1.

I'm going to be so drunk I'll pass out and hopefully have 13/14 hours sleep. That's my plan!

Another improvement for us.

Dd asleep by 6.45pm and up at 5.30am this morning. I told her to go back to bed and to my utter amazement she did. She came back through again at 6.20am.

She does have a cold and isn't feeling her best but it's still all counts.

Thats great news confuzzeled - long may it last - I suppose a bit of an improvement for us - got through to 4.22am - but I did go back to a 7pm bedtime as I was really nervous about another 3.40am start.

HV coming to see us tomorrow. She thankfully didn't make me feel like I was moaning about nothing and said that she definitely wanted to come and see us and see if she could help.

My DS used to wake up every day at 4.15am no matter what i did. One night due to not many naps and a very tired boy he ended up going through his night routine very early starting his routine at 5pm and asleep by 5.45pm normal bedtime was 7pm. He didn't wake up until 6.30am the next morning!

His bedtime is now 5.45pm and he sleeps until 7am. I really find having an early bedtime helps as he settles much easier and sleeps much better now.

Hello again Broms, I hope all goes well with the HV tomorrow.

Nice to meet you Confuzzeled. I hope that the improvements continue.

We've had some shockers this week, mostly around the 3's. However DS has come down with a raging ear infection and the side effects of the pain relief are giving me some good nights (two 5.30 am starts!). That said, he has also been going to sleep A LOT earlier. I think I may try this early bedtime thing when he is better, I don't think that I have that much to lose!

Broms, I really feel for you, how long your day must be. Sleep deprivation is not nothing, it's your sanity. I hope the HV comes up with some good ideas, keep us posted.

FreddiesMum09, I'm glad you had success with early bed times, it seems strange but we're going to keep trying.

StillinMyPJs, as you say, you've got nothing to loose if your already exhausted. At the least it gives you a little extra time to yourself in the evenings.

It has to get better than this - this morning he woke up at 2.57 and screamed and screamed - he is so persistent and LOUD! got him back to sleep for another hour on top of me but that was it............god am going nuts!

HV has told me to limit daytime sleep to 45 mins, bedtime at 7.30am, and to put a mattress in the room and sleep in the room with him when he wakes up and try and get him back to sleep that way.

I managed the 45 minute nap - bedtime was 7.15 - he was so tired he couldn't drink his milk but didn't managed the mattress bit so will try that tonight.

Hows everyone else getting on?

Dd fell asleep on the way back from the supermarket in the car despite me singing and trying to keep her awake. She slept for 15 mins but she refused to go to sleep till 7.30pm. Up again at 5am but in a great mood, singing songs and dancing. There was no way she was going back to sleep.

Brom, I feel so bad for you, you must be exhausted. Your ds is a bit younger than my dd. Up until my dd was 2yo she did wake up during the night allot, I would sit on the floor with my hand through the cot rubbing her back. I put her in a big bed and after a week of her running into my bedroom she started to sleep until about 6am every day. I think the option of being able to get up and find me if she wanted to helped.
