Is replacing the SHHH with a hair dryer a PROP ???

Hi there,
My baby boy is 17 weeks now and just about 1 month ago I started to follow a routine... We had a good transition from 3 to a 4hrs cycle and we are now following a 4 hours adjusted EASY. The main reason for me wanting to establish a routine was that even though he was sleeping well at night (7pm-6am) - waking up once as I am not doing the sleepy feed - he was not napping regularly during the day and not for more than 45 mins usually if at all... so he was very sleepy during feedings.

I started using the PUPD method a week ago and I have seen improvements as he's napping twice a day... however, when sometimes my sshhh doesn't seem to "reach" him I have used a hair dryer which does the trick quite well... after he stops crying and is just sobbing I come back to the shhh and patting.

Is my use of the hair dryer a prop? Would I be regretting its use in the future?

Thanks for your comments

What do you mean you are using a hair dryer???? Do you mean you are turning it on lull him into sleep? In which case you just need to detune an analogue radio for the same effect or buy a CD of white noise. Lots of babies find it soothing, it's similar frequencies to in utero.

I used to use a hairdryer to put my DD to sleep in the daytime for naps. I would leave it on for 10 mins and then turn it off once she was asleep.

We stopped doing this after about a month when she seemed to settle better. The only regret I had was the waste of energy and money in using a hairdryer. We tried a recording of a hairdryer and radio white noise and DD just howled...she needed the real thing
I guess my womb must have sounded more like a hairdryer and less like a detuned radio

Well this may or not may not cheer you up but DS1 is now 9 years old and still likes to have a fan on while he goes to sleep.

I used to tape the hairdryer to cool when he was a baby...

Could you try a fan instead?

be carful if you leave the hairdryer in the room turned on - someone i know 8 year old still needs one on to go to sleep and it set fire to his bed and very scary

and untuned radio may help... or a womb sounds cd.. i remember trying everything with my dd
