my 9 month old is suddenly waking up 2/3 times a night when his used to sleep right through (12hours) , he seems really distressed,he doesnt seem hungry, and as soon as I pick him up and take him into our bed he is fine again and goes straight back to sleep. could this be separation anxiety and if so how should I react to him. I really dont want to get into the habit of him coming into our bed.he is still in our room so would it be better or worse to move him to his own room? any advise would be really appreciated thanks

Had the same problem with my little girl. We decided to put her in her own room. I think we were disturbing her more than we realised, she slept so much better - wish we done it sooner!

Yes, sounds like separation anxiety. You can try to settle him back in his cot. Putting him in his own room might make things worse. It could also be development which is upsetting him, e.g. starting to pull up, perhaps?

thanks for your help, I think we will put him in his own room and see if it helps. Hopefully its just a phase but I really can't complain as he has been a total angel since the day he was born, just don't like seeing him distressed. Thanks again

I think allowing him to settle in your bed could end up being a big mistake.

I moved mine into their own rooms at 3 months, with a monitor in our bedroom. Early i know, but i think every little sound makes you and them. We put moses basket in cot and then gradually moved into cot.

Hi I can totally sympathise, same situation with DS whos 9 months. HAs been a great sleeper since 4 months and last few nights wakes up screaming and I mean a yelp that sounds like hes being hurt or something. Have gone in and comforted him and he looks very scared and eventually does go back to sleep after a cuddle but its making DH and me worried as he seems genuinely upset... dont know what to do. Hes generally a very happy baby and doesnt have any evidence of separation anxiety in the day and loves other people. any advice or similar experiences? Am hoping that its a phase...he has started standing up and cruising on furniture a lot so I guess could be linked to that.

oh and forgot to say that DS sleeps in his own room and always has since 6 weeks so dont think its to do with that.

my dd slept through from about 20 weeks, and then at around 7 months started waking several times a night, for the next roughly 2 months on and off, and is now at nearly 10 months sleeping through again. I can only put it down to teeth or growing pains - she naps like a dream during the daytime, sleeps in her own cot, in fact prefers her cot to cuddles sometime!!! so don't worry, you'll get through it, I promise..!!

thanks for advice he is 10 months now and touch wood has been sleeping fine again apart from these insanely hot nights Think it may have been his teeth as he has two which seem to have appeared from nowhere at the bottom. He is still in our room not that I wanna get rid of him just think it's healthier for him and me and hubby to have our own space

Just so you know, there's a sleep regression at 9 months, so it could be down to that. Can affect from 8-11 months, so I think you're doing well getting through the other side at 10 months!
