Just curious as I keep thinking dd, 2 1/2 may need to drop her nap soon, so wanted to compare with you guys.

At the moment she sleeps approx:

8pm - 7am
1.30 - 3.30pm

I've been having increasing problems getting her to bed in the evening though so am experimenting with cutting her nap down to 1.5 hours which has helped a bit so far.

Having similar problems with dd2 who is 23mths, she sleeps (well goes to bed) 7pm - 7am-ish and then will have a nap 12.30 - 2.15 (when Neighbours finishes!) but is starting to not want to go to sleep until 8pm! luckily she is quite happy in her cot upstairs but I'm thinking of moving the pm nap closer to 12pm and making sure she has no more than 1 1/2hrs. Could you try that?

Sleeps at night 7.30 to 6.45/7.15

Naps from @1.00 - 2.30. I always wake her up as she would probably sleep 2.5 hours and I think at this age it starts affecting their night time sleep

Ditto with puddle! dd2 could sleep for ever in the pm - if I let her, but then wouldn't EVER want to go to sleep at night!

With dd1 we dropped the pm nap when she went into a bed, which was about 2.9, as she never tried to climb out of her cot bed!! but the temptation was too great in a 'normal' bed

2.7 yo

Is just starting to grow out of naps - has one (1.30 - 2.30) probably 30% of the time. The rest of the time she just lies in her bed and 'reads' her books during that hour.

When she DOES sleep, she won't go to sleep until 8-9pm - just lies there singing at the top of her voice which is GRATING - but when she doesn't nap it's 12 solid hours 7pm-7am. Marvellous.

My dts are 2 1/2. Their pattern is:

7.00pm - 7.30/8am
1.00pm - 3.00pm (sometimes they just play in their room but if they have been at creche or Whoosh they sleep)

I always wake at 3pm even if they are sound asleep

(Don't you just LOVE waking up a sleepy toddler? I love just kissing her and patting her lovely tum while she's fast asleep, then she smiles and hugs me and I could just gobble her up!)

between the ages of 2 and 3 children should be having around 13 hrs sleep a day.

My dd age 2.8yrs sleeps 7-7 and a nap of 12:30-1:30

Could you try putting her down at 12:30 and letting her have no more than 2hours? rather than cutting down the sleep, it may just help bringing it forward, then she will have longer to use it more energy in the afternoon to get her tired for bedtime, which you may find you can bring forward.

I think 3:30 is a bit late, and she won't be tired enough by 8

dd (who turns two TODAY) goes to sleep at 10:30pm - 09:00am.... tried everything in the book to get her down earlier so I can have some free time - forget it!

My dd sleeps the same as Puddle's. Sometimes though the nap is more for my sake then dds. I'm often desperate for a break so dd is forced to have a nap whether she wants to or not. And, also I agree with Morningpaper - I love waking her up!

Ds2 (2.2yrs) has never slept for 13 hours in his life. On an average night he will sleep from 11.30pm-7.30pm with a 30minute nap if I'm lucky. On a bad night he will still be wide awake at 1am but still gets up at 7.30am.

My dd is 2y3 and she generally sleeps from 7.30pm - 7.30/8.00am with an hour sleep at lunch time, usually about 1.30. If she has any more than an hour or wakes up later than 2.30 - 3.00 she will not go to sleep at night!
She can go all day without a sleep sometimes but not consistently, and I like having the hour of peace in the day time

crazy - you obviously have one who will sleep for as long as 13 hours a day! Unfortunately it isn't actually possible to make them sleep, so those of us who aren't hitting that figure aren't depriving them of sleep, just coping with a child who doesn't need that much.

At 2 my ds was sleeping about 9.30 until 6.30, and if we were lucky an hour at lunchtime. A friend's ds, almost exactly the same age would sleep 6pm until 9 am AND 2 hours 12.30-2.30. I'd have liked mine to go off earlier, she'd like to have been able to delay the bedtime routine until a bit later - but the amount of time they needed to sleep wasn't determined by us. Between them they did manage an average of 13 hours each I suppose.

lunarsea, I never once meant to suggest to other parents if your child doesn't sleep for 13hrs you are depriving them of sleep.

I should have explained in my post that the 13hrs suggested recommendation from the How to solve your childs sleep problem book.

I am completely aware that children are all different, but in my experiance of myself being a Maternity nurse and Sleep counsellor, I do disagree with you, when you say you cannot make a child sleep for longer, as this is possible, and have many success rates to prove this.

How DO you make a child sleep for longer? (curious)

(Personally I swear by the bedtime-routine, dd has had EXACTLY the same routine from 5pm-7pm since she was about 2 weeks old. Yes she was crap and sleeping through (woke every couple of hours for the first year +) but at least we've always known that bedtime was 7pm. I'm sure my friends who swear their toddlers won't sleep until 11pm made the mistake of not being bedtime-routined enough. Am I wrong?! Just lucky?!)
